This spring / summer it would seem that all has fallen in place and Tamo is adding another surface.

I still do not see why BGSU could not add another surface...yea a new primary would be great, but to be realistic a new rink similar to tamos rinks would make a great secondary surface and open a lot more ice time, and give us the chance to hold a low level tournament.

And our administration's refusal to spend any.

Oh, we spend quite a lot of it. But there are some more important items out there for it to be spent on.

I'm not trying to pick on you at all Drew (though that is an added bonus  ), but I am getting really sick of hearing this sentiment expressed by our fanbase. To quote Phil Savage: "that just is not sound thinking."

That concept is better understood by the wall in your office. Some people on here are under the impression that BGSU is only here to spend money on athletics and the rest of our programs can go to hell.

Considering how much money can be made off more ice time, it's dumb for BGSU to continue to put off adding another sheet of ice. It's an investment which can actually pay for itself.

Not to sound snide, but have you done a cost/benefit analysis that would prove the return on investment?

Looking at Shanter is all the cost analysis you need. It's simple business that if a competitor continues to take market share you will eventually be out of business. If you don't make an attempt to compete and match their services what business do you have in the market?

Ugh. Perhaps it just isn't worth the effort.

You're right. F*ck you! :-D

I'll try and synthesize this as much as possible. You have to understand that we are talking about two totally different animals here. TOS is a private entity, and the Ice Arena is part of a public, state governed entity (the University). The first major difference is that the funding structures for each are radically different. TOS, being a private non-profit, is able to reinvest all of its revenue internally. Much of the revenue from our Ice Arena goes to various other programs within Student Affairs.

Also, another major consideration is that there are very different labor laws regarding construction projects by state institutions. When the University builds something, they must use all union labor and, if it is even remotely possible, construction firms from within the state. A non-profit entity can go out and hire whomever they want, from wherever they want, and therefore their bids are much more competative as they are likely coming from national solicitation. On top of that, TOS is likely not building a venue with 3000-5000 seats and the other trappings of a D1 hockey facility.

The bottom line is that BGSU will do what BGSU will do in BGSU's own time. We are in now way competing with TOS because we are on totally different administrative, fiscal and philosophical levels. We are competing when it comes to public perception, but public perception doesn't change any of the realities that either institution is working with.

I may be off on a specific detail or two, but I hope this makes some sense.

It is completely illogical to compare a state run entity with a private company.

The cash flow structures are COMPLETELY different. BGSU extra ice would take a heck of a lot longer to pay for itself than a private company. Say it with me: D-E-P-R-E-C-I-A-T-IO-N!

Does BG's athletic department pay for taxes on net operating profit?

Of course it is.
