Football gets field turf
Football gets field turf
I posted the below on the football site also.
Yup, there goes Puckhead complaining about the status of the ice arena again.
So let me see if I have this correct.
They spend $ 7 million to build the Sebo center,
a building that all sports are able to use. In the process of building this structure they damaged the drainage system. The field is destroyed during the Miami football game. Now they are spending $ 1 million to replace the playing surface. Did I get close on that statement?
The Ice Arena has 40 year old ice making equipment that Buddy can not get replacement parts for and the cooling fluid can not be purchased. Soon Buddy will run out of duct tape and the ice arena will not be able to make ice.
I understand that artifical turf will cost less over time. I also understand that the ice arena is on the endangered species list. What will happen if something serious breaks at the arena? Will they do an emergency patch job for $ 50,000; will they replace everything for $ 500,000; or close the facility.
You came up with $ 1,000,000 for football; come up with $ 500,000 to save BGSU Hockey, BGHS Hockey BG Community Hockey, BG Figure Skating and BG Curling.

Dont panic. We will have a new arena with in 5-10 years, odds are it will be a combo with basketball.
imagine if they put plastic ice down how many people would think was so great
Field turf sucks and when you think about it....we dont even need a football stadium that big anyway...esp for all 5 home games, with no hope for a national title ever.
Money would be better spent on Basketball and Hockey and adding a womens Varsity hockey for cries sake already. Its laughable we were not one of the first womens hockey adopters, I still dont get that, a school with such a rich hockey tradition no being a front runner in this. But this to will come to pass.
and by the way the rink was endangered years ago, the actuall structure was poorly designed and has been nothing but trouble, and the only things keeping the ice in there are some well qualifyed machinist who have to hand craft each replacement part for the extinct compressor units.
We could in therory buy the ones from Clause Arena in Findlay when they close doors for good on ice at the end of this summer...and only what 4 years old...heck we could move the whole 12800 seating facility brick by brick up here!

I think you added a 0 to the Clause Arena capacity..1280 sounds about right, and half those have obstructed view. I DO wonder is anyone has looked in to the idea of canabalizing their ice making equipment.MACMAN wrote:(replacement part for the extinct compressor units.)

Because my source says that just is not going to happen. There will be two facilities that will only be joined with a hallway at most. We will not see a facility like the Schottenstein Center at OSU, logistically it will not work for us. That decision has already been made. I believe in 10 to 15 years, closer to 10, we will see two facilities built to address basketball, hockey, commencement, and concerts.
and its in study, it does look currently as if the costs of paying labor for the floor installs and removals, boards etc is not as high as they original anticipated.
and that the cost savings of one building really seem to be offseting the labor as well.
Thats odd...you remarks allways amuse me. " my source"

A synthetic surface would allow the potential for the Doyt to be rented out for events. BGSU could make money from the facility rental fees from high school football playoffs, soccer tournaments, concerts etc.
That money could help renovate other buildings like Steller Field and the Ice Arena that could use an upgrade and that do not have the ability to bring in revenue like a field-turfed Doyt would and will.

With a synthetic surface, couldn't the Doyt be used for soccer?

I'll only believe it when I actually see it happen. I'm willing to be that the Doyt doesn't see anymore use than it does currently. Putting another million dollars into the Football stadium is a joke. Leaving out privately funded projects (hockey locker room and Sebo), what is the difference between amount of money spent on the Ice Arena, Anderson Arena, and the Doyt since the addition of the north stands in the Ice Arena (1988)? I'm sure the numbers will shock a lot of people.Dayons_Den wrote:A synthetic surface would allow the potential for the Doyt to be rented out for events. I know that the soccer team likes having their own facilities, but if you combine the facilities then you're saving money on maintenance.

As far as I'm concerned, the soccer team can go cry a river. They're the bitches that just randomly come into Perry Fieldhouse during the off-season and force everybody out of the turf room just because "they're a varsity sport" and get priority. They don't even have the respect and courtesy to tell the fieldhouse when they are coming in. Nothing but a major pain in the ass for students using the facility.BGDrew wrote:I know that the soccer team likes having their own facilities, but if you combine the facilities then you're saving money on maintenance.
The next time that happens, we're telling them to wait.
