BG alum, US national team player, and NHL alum Ken Morrow will be in Topeka here this Saturday to help with a fundraiser for TopekaIce. It's a group thats looking to build a rink here in town. I don't know what to expect, and I bet it will be a small event, but I'm free. I'll be down there in my BG hockey jersey in the 90-degree weather to show some love.

Well, I went today, and they had some kids playing roller hockey, a few other games, live music (cover band), free hot dogs and pop, a VERY respectable silent auction including autographed Lemieux and Gretzky jerseys among other items, building info, etc. I didn't get to see/meet Ken Morrow, but we did get to talk to Bob Owen who was on the 1960 US Olympic Team.
Currently, the group Topeka Ice has raised about $800,000, but needs about $2.5 for this project. The city DONATED a large chunk of land in the downtown area and just off of I-70 for their development. The building will be a two-story facility with one sheet of ice to start out with, although they could end up building two eventually. There will be party rooms, pro shops, curling lanes, etc. If anyone is interested in donating (any denomination), see the links above.
