Eno is 6'3", 190 pounds and plays for Green Mountain in the EJHL.
Nick Eno didn't attend the NHL draft. The former standout goalie for Howell High School in Howell, Michigan was at home when the phone started ringing. The first call was from his agent telling him he'd been drafted. As one would expect, the phone continued to ring. One of the calls was from his high school coach who had encouraged him to leave high school hockey to get to the next level. Eno had listened to his coach and for his senior year he played for the Green Mountain (VT) Glades of the Eastern Junior Hockey League.

Playing for a weak Glades team, Eno finished in the top 10 in both GAA and save percentage and earned a trip to the EJHL All-Star game. Eno is the first player to be drafted to the NHL from the Green Mountain franchise.

What with goaltender Josh Unice's unexpected decision late last week to forego his (fall of 2007) Bowling Green commitment in favor of the OHL's Kitchener Rangers, the Falcons and head coach Scott Paluch moved swiftly to find themselves a viable netminding partner for returnee Jimmy Spratt.

And quite the replacement they found in Eastern Junior League goaltender Nick Eno, an 18 year-old Howell, Michigan native who spent the 2007 season with the Green Mountain Glades, who play out of Williston, Vermont.

Last season, Eno, while playing for a below .500 Green Mountain squad, put up a 9-14-2 record, a 3.60 GAA, and a .902 save percentage, which earned him a spot at the 2007 EJHL All Star game.

Despite the sub-par win-loss mark, Eno was highly regarded in 2007, so much so that Buffalo took a flyer on him with its seventh round (187th overall) at the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.

His success this season came under the tutelage of someone who knows a thing or two about netminding: Green Mountain head coach and former collegiate keeper Christian Soucy, the one-time University of Vermont netminder (1991-1993) who was once property of the Chicago Blackhawks. The 37 year-old Gatineu, Quebec native is in his fourth season of coaching with the Glades.

Prior to moving out east, Eno played for Howell High School, where in 2006 he was named his side's MVP. Eno didn't attend the '07 draft, and got the news via a phone call from his 'family advisor.' According to 'Hockey's Future,' Eno, upon finishing his junior year, was strongly encouraged by his coach to leave his high school squad for the deeper rigors of junior hockey, a move which now appears to have paid off.

As for Unice's abrupt departure, Bowling Green's Paluch, in response to our inquiry, succinctly said this:

"It’s very disappointing. We feel it was a combination of poor timing, and poor advice.”

We could hardly disagree.

We've no issue if Unice really felt the 'O' was the place to be. But to do so this late in the game, frankly, smacks of bad taste.

Further, Unice's claim of playing more games may hold little water. This coming year, Kitchener returns its top keeper from last season: Twenty year-old Lancaster, PA native John Murray, a 6-1, 206 pounder who last year put up an impressive 40-9-0-1-2 (OTL and SOL) record.

Further still is the fact Kitchener will play host to the 2008 Memorial Cup.

Five will get you ten that was a key selling point in bringing Unice into the fold.

However, while hosting the Memorial Cup may guarantee the Rangers and coach/GM Peter DeBoer a spot in the tournament, rest assured that DeBoer, one of the most respected coach/GMs in Major A, won't let his club 'back into' the event.

In other words, we think Unice will have a short leash, and if he doesn't perform, will long be riding the pine.

As bitter as he may be for Unice’s departure, Paluch, in the end, took the high road.

“With all that’s said and done,” Paluch adds, “we’re extremely excited as we move forward.”

In hindsight, Perhaps Unice might have been better off playing at least a season with Bowling Green to see what the college experience was all about. Had he played well--and still felt the OHL was the place to be--then he could have politely departed next spring, thereby allowing the Falcons ample time to respond.

Some years back, I was taught an invaluable lesson: Business owners can take bad news. What they don't like are surprises.

Hopefully in the future, Unice will heed that advice.

This pretty much slams the door on Neville coming back this year to back up Spratt. The depth chart for G looks like this:

1) Spratt
2) Greer
3) Eno (Probably will move up to 2 after some college time under his belt)

I guess if the Sabres think enough of the kid to draft him (albeit with a 7th rounder) that says something. I guess I'm kind of surprised BG was able to get him at this point in the year. Anyone know what other options he may have been looking at?

I'm not a big Pooch fan, but it would appear he and his staff did a good job dealing with the Unice situation if Eno is what he appears to be.

The EJHL doesn't garner that much noteriety. It is my belief that Eno was seen at the EJHL All-Star game and approached. This would make sense as we have signed on Centre Jake Coyle. Who is an all-star himself leading the Jr. Bruins in Points and PIMS. Eno is said to be a streaky goalie in the EJHL much like Jimmy Spratt, shows signs of absolute brilliance as well as the "that was garbage goaltending" goals. Like Spratt, Eno plays on a team with lackluster talent around him and could prove a great fit to help out our Felcons.....but hey thats just my opinion

My feeling is if hes on right off and sprat is streaky( although I think and it shows he has worked hard since last season and I would wager he is more solid) that Eno will take #1 spot. Not to dis t˙e other two, but I would be it will be a smart move of banking on developing the future rather than keeping the status quo (unlike the football team).
this whole ordeal has Good mojo for me...can quite pinpoint why, but it does.

8.7.07 When Nick Eno was drafted this June by the Buffalo Sabres at the 2007 Entry Draft Nick thought life couldn't get much better...but it did. After training all summer at Superskills and attending the Sabres rookie training camp Nick received a full scholarship from Bowling Green University. Located just 90 minutes from Nicks home, playing in the CCHA is a dream come true for the Michigan native. Congratulations and good luck Nick.


According to another goaltending scout Nicks Skills noticeably increased and he places Nick solidly in his preseason NCAA top 10 goaltenders

I think it's funny how the positions the players are at is also their performance on the ice...D, D, D, F, F, D, D, F, F, F, F, D, D...You get my point.

folks realy just hate the truth. Football will be horific this year, most likely the worst in the MAC and likely second to last in the NATION. They hate Esp when hockey is poised to be good, and getting great.

How about we just let the teams records speak for themselves. I never make predictions because of the whole "Any given Sunday" idea. I hope BOTH teams have a winning percentage in the upper 80's. But it won't depend on what is said here. It will depend on what the teams do day in and day out to prepare for and play their games. GO FALCONS!!!!!

MACMAN, unlike you, I support ALL athletic teams at BG including the hockey team. All I was doing was making a point that last years squad was horriffic and didn't play anywhere in the vicinity of the talent level they had. So put away your hunting knife and club and relax and think about the criticism you give before lashing out at the criticism you get. Chill the eff out.

This kid might be good eventually, but I would caution folks from getting too excited about him this year. The EJHL is Tier III Junior A, not Tier II(NAHL) or Tier I(USHL) like most incoming college players play. I don't know how much junior hockey most of you guys get to see, but their is a huge difference between the talent of kids playing Tier III and those in the upper two tiers. I see a lot of Tier III hockey here in Phoenix and regularly play against many former Tier III players and former D1 players. D1 is a big step up from U.S. Tier III play. Kind of like going from "A" ball straight to the big club. That league has put some players into D1 though.... so we'll see.

I think we might have gotten a gem by getting him in basically a year early, but many higher Tier goalies struggle when they move to D1( Spratt would be an example of that). If he can come in and be a good, serviceable back up to Spratt this year, that would really be great....anything else this year would be icing on the cake.

However, that said, it was a very nice recovery from the whole jilting by Unice.
