LIGHTS OUT!!!

I have spent a LOT of time in the ice arena over the years, but tonight was a first!! My son was playing in the first game of the play offs for summer Slo-Puck league. They were losing to a Fremont team () 2-1 with about 1:30 left on the clock...when suddenly all of the lights go out in the rink!! No back up lights, total pitch darkness!! It was SOOOOO FREAKIN' WEIRD!!! People were pulling out their cell phones for light, but finally a few ice arena workers found some flashlights. Buddy was there and said they had no idea what caused it. The compressors and everything in the rink was down, along with outside lights (street, parking lot, etc...) in the immediate area around the rink. Obviously they stopped the game, but the good news is that my son's team won because Fremont had an illegal player on the team and had to forfeit!! HAHAHAHAHA!!!!! We play tomorrow night again....that is, if they get the lights and compressors going!! :-D

It is really amazing that with the amount of money the University has spent on certain things, they can't throw just a little bit more toward the Arena.

Do you think the immediate area is being punished for proximity to the Ice Arena?

I don't think a little bit more would make a difference. A lot more is needed.

Dang. I thought this thread was in reference to a great UFO CD released back in '77.

When it comes to a state university, a little bit and a lot are relative terms. Relative to some of the things the school spends money on, it would only take a little bit to make sure that the gosh darn lights don't go out in the middle of a game.

I can see the headline now. Prized recruit injured in debut after Ice House lights go out.

Can you say Game Over?

The good thing about what they have done is they failed to waste money on minor updates and got all they could out of the facility before making a major improvement. At least that's what I hope they are doing..........

Guys, I played hockey at BG (walk on) and feel the pains about the rink. It is the biggest Catch 22 ever...the program doesn't generate revenue or as much interest as it used to, so there is no immediate need to update the facilities, and obviously it is hard to improve a program when the facilities are so outdated. The best way to get more money into the program is for the Athletic Department to start a VERY aggressive private donation campaign. For those of you that haven't seen what Miami has done with its new rink, it is amazing. And they did it with mostly private donations. Hopefully BGSU will see the vaule of a new facility that perhabs could double as a basketball and hockey facility. I mean we do have a nationally recognized basketball program...and the men are re-building too!

We have made a lot of progress with athletic facilities over the past couple years- perhaps more than in the previous 25. I firmly believe, despite budget pains, that we are moving in the right direction. I certainly understand frustration in this area- I am impatient too. But BG Athletics has stated publicly that plans are being formulated in regard to our two biggest facilities issues within a dept. master plan.

As with the Sebo, FieldTurf, etc, Falcon fans everywhere will be needed to make these plans/dreams a reality. The private funding/donation area has never been more important. We saw it with Sebo. we see it w/FieldTurf and I firmly belive we will see it in our next round of projects/plans.

Go Falcons!

I can understand lights going out - it happens. But why are there no battery-powered emergency exit flood lights? Isn't there a law about this? We have them all over our facility.

Speaking of the "master plan", wasn't it suppose to be out by now? I thought GC said in late August or early Sept.

They didn't come on either! I asked Buddy that too, but he had no idea what was going on that night. I am sure he now knows what happened, but I never remembered to ask him about it!! It was one weird night, let me tell ya!!!!

It was something out at the stadium due to the rain, I believe (not the Sebo). The lights there were out also.
