From an article on the BGSU athletics website:

"Prior to coming to BGSU, Petruska played for three semi-professional clubs, most recently for the Cleveland Barons of the North American Hockey League (NAHL) in 2005-2006, preceded by the Waterloo Black Hawks and Des Moines Buccaneers of the United States Hockey League (USHL) in 2004-2005."

Eventhough these are not semi-professional hockey teams (they are Junior hockey teams), it isn't good that someone from Athletic Communications is linking a Collegiate player to playing semi-professional hockey prior to coming to BGSU. Not a good typo to have on the front of the hockey website.

Not a big deal. Everyone knows juniors can play college hockey.

No, the NAHL and the USHL aren't Semipro. Semi-pro is WHL, OHL, and QMJHL. The diffrence is, Semi-pro implies you are being payed. The three aforementioned leagues all pay you to play there. It is a very small wage. "basically enough to eat for the month."

That's why guys that play in the OHL, QMJHL, WHL aren't allowed to play in the NCAAs. The guys get to make a choice at around age 15: do they want to play major juniors or do they want to play NCAA? If they choose the latter, they end up playing in the USHL, EJHL, NAHL, BCJHL, OPJHL, etc. before going to college, otherwise they'll go wherever they're drafted by the major junior leagues.

Usually players play in leagues suck as the OPJHL the BCHL, MJHL, USHL. Wait until they are drafted. Then that season the team and player discuss what situation would be better the Tier 1 Canadian Leagues or the NCAA route. It also depends where you live as to what league you can join. This is a reason that many chose college over tier 1. In Manitoba we are allowed to chose to play in the OHL or the WHL in British Columbia you must play in the WHL. Tier 1 Canadian drafts by region. Players from other countries have a distinct advantage as they can chose which league they want to join.

side...its also the same reason why you see basically no one from the European, Scandinavian countries in NCAA hockey.
