NMU escapes with the split 3-2.....

I listened to the 3rd period on the internet stream and it sounded like:

1)Spratt gave up a couple of softies, which, if true, is disappointing as I know he had habit of giving up bad goals at bad times last year.

2)NMU's goalie stood on his head in the last 30 seconds to keep us from getting the equalizer.....sounded like we had 4-5 shots and the WBGU annoucers thought Cepis had the tying goal for sure by the NMU goalie got his leg on it???

Maybe some of you who were there can fill me in on what really went down....

Their second goal fluttered in after Spratt gloved it then lost it. The third one went between his feet. He got most of it, just not enough.

Overall, we played horrible tonight. There was no hustle or sense of urgency like last night.

I would have loved nothing more than a sweep tonight (in hockey and all Falcon sports), and I only got to hear the third period, but it sounded like a very hard fought ending. This team had numerous scoring chances late in the game but couldn't seem to punch one through. After five wins in a row, I'll take the effort - if the third period was reflective of the overall effort. Either way, I think we have a damn good team on our hands.

Oh, and from the sounds of it, Kantola seems to be playing very well! Glad to hear him be in the mix of things.

Kantola sure didn't look like anything special tonight to me. The only player I thought really stood out was Tim Maxwell. Both on offence and defence Maxwell was in position and executed well. Aside from him....I didn't see much to write about.

The radio guys made it sound like Sinkewich had a good game for us. Otherwise it seemed like we struggled a bit more than the past weekends. We spent a lot of time in our own zone struggling to clear the puck and really weren't able to sustain a lot of pressure in the offensive end. From the sounds of it, their goalie did make a couple great saves to preserve the win.

Hopefully this was just a bad night and we'll take care of ND on tuesday!

I was at lastnights game and I can say Sprat kept us in that game. He came up HUGE when made some stupid turnovers in the Neutral zone, stoping one out right break away and several two on ones.
We lost lastnight because we let Norther control the flow and speed of the game. We did not play our game. We saw spurts of our game, and those were successful but the few min we did play was not enough. Should we have had last years Sprat in goal Northern would have easily had 5-6 goals.

We did however just have a FIVE game Win streak FOLKS!!!! That is right 5 in a row these guys are gamers and they will learn from last night, move on and go get back on the attack. maybe we needed this loss in order to be better mentally prepared for Tuesdays ND game. Im convinced that if our get out and play thier game that ND will fall.
Also a big kudos to all the fans who stood up in the stands after the buzzer and just outright applauded this team for all they have done thus far in the season and all we know they will accomplish in the games to come...the season is what 1/4 over and they are off to the best we have had in a long time. A big game this week at ND then have Wayne State and MI and then the BAdger classic in WI.

We've got ourselves a good hockey team folks, with some great successes and as we move on to some CCHA dominate opponents in DEC, we need take the momentum of the 5 game streak, capitalize on that, recharge after the loss last night and go after these teams with Avengance

rc - were you at this game? :D Your analysis is spot on in every aspect. NMU had a solid defensive plan in place whereby it seemed that the majority of the action took place along the boards in our zone and when we did cross the blue line into their zone, it didn't take very long for things to revert to the former.

Their goalie - yes. Their crossbar - most definitely yes!!

The flow was not their for the Falcons last night...this is told by seeing two Falcons each with an opportunity to pick up the losse pucks on the boards, and each just either standing there or pealing off to catch some nonexistent pass as a NM skater took off with the puck...ie bad communication on the ice. Our guys just did not play there game last night, and its a good wake up call. Because should they skate like that in DEC or JAN against those teams we will get buried.

I think the different line combinations last night had a big effect on the ending also. I understand moving Kantola up with Cepis and Perkin because of his size, but his speed doesn't exactly fit with the rest of the line. Kantola, Geelan, and Tiesling seemed to fit really well Friday night. They didn't have a lot of good scoring chances, but they were able to bang some bodies around and really set a good pace for the rest of the lines. I think putting Dee or Svendsen up with Cepis and Perkin would have worked a lot better.

Yea , I'm not sure I like Svendson playing with Whitmore and Mazzei. Svendson is a shooter, we need some one willing to put the puck on the sticks of Mazzei and Whitmore. That being said, NMU had a great blanket Defencive plan laid out in order to stop Derek. Unfortunatley for us their game plan paid off.

Like we all said last week, Northern was better than their 1-8 record. They played solid defense on Saturday night. We were caught on too many odd man rushes especially in the 2nd and 3rd periods. Spratt played well but gave up a soft goal. All in all, I am very encouraged and like what I see. I'll be at ND tomorrow night and hope we can come away with a victory.
