Why, exactly, do the NEB-Omaha fans have a "thing" with BGSU? Did something happen that causes a rift?
BTW, CCHA HOCKEY STANDINGS IN THE AKRON BEACON JOURNAL!! YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
(they must have finally taken my advice to cover BG athletics. I'm sure it has nothing to do with Ohio State being a member of the CCHA!)
I know this has been told before but I forgot...

See Mav message board thread.
They have a lot of pent up frustration. There were happenings back when they first joined the league.
I thought they were starting to come out of it but I suppose not. Gads, U of M's little brother? I've been called many things in my day, but this is the lowest of the low.
Actually, I'm going to ask. Be right back.

It's really just a handful of fans, who happen to like to post a lot on their website and uscho. It started when BG visited UNO the year before UNO joined the CCHA. Our Scott Hewson had enough verbal crap from a mavs player, and gave him a little cross check from behind - not against the boards or anything, just a little frustration hit. UNO was playing at an arena that has kind of a Roman coliseum feel to it, and they serve beer - boy, do they ever serve beer. Well, the 8,000 or so homers got off like it was a WWF event. From then on, be it Tyler Masters making a comment before a series, or the Boston wit of Buddy Powers not translating well in the cornfield, these can't-get-over-it fans keep the spirit alive.
Things are a little different in the new arena. It's bigger, and isn't nearly selling out like the novelty act did in the early years.
The things I've seen in Omaha......Mascot Night was the ultimate. Picture a couple dozen oversized (10' tall) mascots of various products (Cracker Jack sailor, etc.) walking around on the ice, throwing free product samples into the crowd - candy bars, boxes, cans, whatever. This is between periods. After more than 20 minutes, the Zamboni comes out to do its job, mascots and people still on the ice. One guy is walking over to the door, slips, hits his head on the ice, and appears to be dead. Thankfully, he wasn't, and I understand he's OK. No more Mascot Night.
A game at Omaha is unlike any other college hockey game I've ever seen. Everything is marketed and sponsored, from the opening faceoff to the final buzzer. It's more like a minor league baseball game. Most of our players really get a kick playing there, but say that it was more fun in the old arena.
I didn't mention that both the old and new venues are not on UNO's campus, and are not owned by the university. It'd be like playing at Gund Arena. Not very many students in the seats. With Omaha's huge market and not very many other entertainment options, the UNO games were the place to go in the beginning years of the program.

"Regarding BGSU, I would think their biggest strength is that they never give up, They never slow down and they battle hard even after the other team scores. We have to be on our game and never, ever take the foot off the gas for a second."

"BG was relentless. It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."
