Great game vs Ferris!
After being behind for most of the game, the Falcons were able to score twice in the 3rd period (thanks to John Mazzei) to defeat Ferris State 2-1 on Saturday night. This is a huge victory for BG, as it keeps them at .500 for the season and keeps them tied for 6th in the CCHA. It also gives BG the tiebreaker advantage over Ferris State in case of a 6th place tie.
This was a much, much more interesting game than last night, mostly because the game was faster and much more physical. There was lots of hitting on both sides and lots of penalties. Eno did a pretty good job in net again tonight, although the goal he gave up was pretty soft. Congratulations to the guys on a great win!

The student section just started cheering like crazy after a while, and I wondered why for a second, then I saw McIrath coming in to take the faceoff. That just got everybody pumped up. What a warrior. I wouldn't be surprised if indirectly that helped us win, because we scored the go-ahead goal less than two minutes later.Altoid_storm wrote:Great game tonight, especially the third period once Todd got back, what a trooper!

That was crazy! I was behind the glass and had people leaning all over me when he came out to take the face off! I think that really did help us. We were all pumped up and you could tell the intensity changed.bgsufalcon24 wrote:

Can someone share what happened? I didn't get a chance to listen last night..bgsufalcon24 wrote:The student section just started cheering like crazy after a while, and I wondered why for a second, then I saw McIrath coming in to take the faceoff. Anybody else think this should be emailed to the director of officiating? Absolutely ridiculous to not call a major on that hit.NCAA Men's Ice Hockey Rule Book wrote:High Sticks
SECTION 21. a. Carrying sticks above the height of 4 feet [1.22m], height
of the goal cage, is prohibited.
PENALTY—Minor.
b. A player shall not violently use the stick for contact to the head or neck
region of the opponent.
PENALTY—Major or disqualification at discretion of the referee.
Also, why is there a video review if it is not used? The shot off the inside of the post in the second period should have been reviewed. NO official was in position to see if the puck crossed the line. The way the puck was on edge, spinning, it very well could have hit the post, hit the pad, then came back out. From where I was standing the thick pad around the bottom of the net blocked me from having a clear view. I know for a fact there's no way the ref could tell from where he was.
Phi or Die
Basically, Ferris player carried puck across the blue line, McIllrath came across the ice to check him, Ferris player raised stick to protect himself (like a pu$$y) and cross-checked McIllrath in the throat. Much worse hit than Tiesling's that got him a 5-minute major.rc_ziggy84 wrote: Can someone share what happened? I didn't get a chance to listen last night..

Actually, for once we hold the tiebreaker with all teams in question (unlike football in recent yearsbgsufalcon24 wrote:It also gives BG the tiebreaker advantage over Ferris State in case of a 6th place tie.
edit: forgot UNO in that list and also, a big tie is somewhat unlikely considering NMU will probably pick up at least a point against the lakers. Ferris maybe, maybe not against UM, and duh Mavs are finished.

Spouse and I missed the first half of Friday's game. What we saw was pitiful. Saturday's game was much the same except for signs of life in the 3rd that led to victory. Good gravy, we couldn't even get the puck out of our defensive zone half the time, PP, 5x5, or 4x4!
[No, I have never played ice hockey or any other kind of hockey.] I'm rarely down on the team as a whole, but these guys have been underachieving. Spouse and I began attending games in the 2000-2001 season, and what makes us happy is the best effort the team can give, win or lose. Sometimes, the best effort wasn't good enough. I recall MSU changing players while keeping the puck in the BG defensive zone. The best effort wasn't good enough to break out of that and beat MSU.
Examples this season are the games vs. Miami. The Falcons played great both nights and the victory was fabulous. I have no reservations saying Miami was and is the better team, and the loss went down easy because the guys played hard and well.
Then we have a lack of intensity vs. tOSU and vs. Ferris. OSU is lousy and BG should have swept the $uckeyes. This weekend, I saw BG attempting to bring the puck through the neutral zone with all 5 skaters in (say) the near half of the ice. It was like a mites game--everybody was in a knot around the puck.
So then I'm wondering if Paluch really is a lousy coach. Certain people have been calling for his head
. Maybe they're right! Was he telling them to play that way? Were the players sticking to the game plan, or were they going off on their own? We repeatedly had 4 guys standing on the blue line in the neutral zone waiting for the puck carrier to dump-in or skate in instead of carrying some speed.
Guys ran into each other. Passes went to skates instead of sticks. Spouse has been down on Maxwell all season, of not last season. I thought he was a great addition to the team and have been pleased over all, but now I'm seeing him making bad decisions and passes and being too cute with the puck. Maybe that's my beef with the whole team. It seems everybody has been trying to make the perfect play at the perfect time. 6 total shots on goal during PP Friday and only 4 tonight! Simplify and get back to basics.
Whew! Thanks for reading
Oh: The officiating was poor. I still believe Hall is the worst ref in the CCHA, but Lisko is showing promise. As mentioned already, there was the stick job on McIlrath. Wietecha was called for roughing and I swear he was just standing there and McIlrath(?) ran into him.

Seeing as how we were picked to finish last in the CCHA, I'd say we are far from underachieving.

I agree completely...the forecast was bleak for these Falcon Icers and they have come out and proven a lot of people wrong. A .500 season was far from expected and is a welcome sight...especially the wins at home...and it's nice that we've been able to come back the last two weekends after losing Friday and get the win on Saturday...I believe that hadn't happened all season per another thread...I just hope this team can keep it together and maybe pull a few shockers in the CCHA tourney.BGDrew wrote:Seeing as how we were picked to finish last in the CCHA, I'd say we are far from underachieving.
