Doc Emrick

Mike "Doc" Emrick was honored Thursday as the recipient of the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award for outstanding contributions as a hockey broadcaster. Widely considered the voice of hockey in the United States, Emrick, a St. Clair resident who earned a Ph.D. -- and his nickname -- at Bowling Green, began his broadcasting career calling games for the IHL's Port Huron Wings.

• Tom Hendrix, Adult Ironman of the Year, has been involved with hockey for many years, both as a player and rink owner. After his four-year playing career at Bowling Green State University, he remained active in the hockey community and eventually built the Gardens Ice House. His ice arena is home to more than 60 adult hockey teams and has hosted various adult hockey tournaments over the years.

I have never understood the admiration of Mike Emrick. His voice is grating and he says the most inane things. "Glass" is not a verb no matter how many times he tries to use it that way. I won't even watch a game if he's doing the play-by-play. Thank goodness I get the CBC and HNIC on my local cable.

I don't have a big problem with Emrick, but he's not my favorite either.
Some times I get the feeling that he is trying to explain the game to people who don't know anything about hockey. It kind of gives the broadcasts an amateurish-feel to them. In his defense, I'm sure his network bosses through the years have insisted on that.
It's hard to accurately describe, but HNIC seems more authentic and less dumbed down. That, of course, is not entirely Emrick's fault. It might be better to compare him with other national-level U.S. broadcasters (not that there are very many of those).

Unfortunately, the state of hockey in America (TV ratings-wise) means broadcasters need to take the educational approach still. So I can live with that... unfortunately, Emrick is starting to rival Gary Thorne in the screaming department.

If he is considered the voice of hockey in the USA, that doesn't say much for any other announcers. He reminds me of someone that goes to Star Trek conventions and lives with their parents.

Bingo. And that's why I only watch CBC broadcasts (even though that exposes you to an inordinate amount of Maple Leafs games).

Gary Thorne, anytime I hear him it reminds me of watching hockey on ESPN back in the 90's and early 2000's. He'll always be my favorite because he was the main guy I listened to as a kid growing up watching hockey. Jim Hughson is great too, but I mainly like him because I got so used to hearing him in the EA Sports hockey video games back in the day. As for Emrick, his voice does get a little annoying after hearing it for 3 periods, as do his random college hockey references regarding specific players. But then again I'd much rather listen to him than Joe Benenati and a few of those other guys that are on Versus occasionally.

In the last two games, Doc has uttered the phrases "fanatical fans", and "defended by the defense". He also mentioned about 47 times throughout the OTs last night that "next goal wins". I like his demeanor, but find him very grating. I was a big Thorne fan as well. When I think of hockey voices, it's him and Mike Lang.

I definitely like Thorne the best out of any hockey announcer. I've gotten so used to his voice from watching games and playing ESPN NHL 2k5.

My favorites (and of course I'm biased) are Rick Moffat and Murray Wilson on the Habs radio broadcasts. I should set it up so I can listen to them on the net and watch the game on the tube at the same time. I wonder how bad the delay effect would be?

I used to be able to sometimes pick up the French radio broadcasts of Montreal games in the 80's. It was hilarious: bleh, bleh, bleh, BOBBY SMITH, bleh, bleh, bleh.

NHL.com still offers that broadcast feed. I think I listened to a few of those back then, trying to pull in Whalers-Canadiens games...
