Tough way to get a winning record

Post by rood »

I'm not making excuses here or looking for moral victories, but 11 of the 18 games the hockey team has played so far have been against teams that are currently in the top 20 in the nation. We are 2-8-1 in those games and 3-2-2 when playing teams outside of the top 20.

Well at least we know where we stand, which is currently outside the top 20, unfortunately. Four of those losses came against the #1 ranked team though. Playing in the CCHA will never afford us an easy road. We also have two games next month against both of Miami and Michigan. We seem to always play well against Michigan at home and we beat Miami at home last year. Hopefully we can steal a game from one or both of them.

With that being said, there are only 58 division 1 hockey teams I believe. So just because a team is in the top 20 doesn't mean that they're that great, they're just better than the other 66% of the teams.

With respect, I've heard the same thought expressed for years. I think the mood of a lot of folks is when and how does the program climb beyond the current rut. And regardless of how far it can go, is it getting what it should out of the staff running it. Finally, even if being on the upper end of things every year is unrealistic, I think most feel it should be able to surge to the top more than it has.

Sad to think that we've reached a point where getting to .500 could be considered reason for celebration.

Quoted for truth. When your current coach's cumulative record is as bad as ours is and you finished with only seven wins in 38 games two years ago, a .500 record doesn't look so bad. By the looks of it though, we've actually only had one .500 record in the previous 11 seasons leading into this year http://www.uscho.com/stats/teamYxY.php/ ... der,m.html . So maybe a .500 record is cause for more than a celebration :smt100

I don't think we should count the 4 games against ND, since they are the best NHL team in our conference...

I honestly wouldn't be surprised to see some 'changes'......after Paluch's contract is up. GC is on a mission, but I don't know if another buy out is a good idea right now.

His contract is up at the end of next season. 2009 - 2010

As GC is buying out Greg Brandon he is getting money from donations, markets and begging.
For the record "I know nothing"! That said, it would be financially better for GC to buy Paluch out after Christmas, than to wait until April.

The term "check in hand" comes to mind

If nothing happens by next Tuesday, nothing will happen until the end of next season.

But then again, I know nothing...

All I can say is we can't continue to use the excuse that we played "better"
teams and lost. HELLO !!! We should be striving to be one of those "better"teams. Beating the average to below average teams ( in which BG is included) is not "getting better". The knowledgeable fans know this has to end. Miami was nothing 10-15 years ago and have built a great
program. Notre Dame was a notorious CCHA dog and in 3 years are the #1 team in the nation after going to the finals last year. Not only do we have to
hope to compete with Ohio State but ALASKA and FERRIS have passed us by. Good grief! Enough of the PC in BG and if I hear Pooch one more time I'm gonna puke. If Christopher can find the K to buy :vom: out Brandon he can get the K to boot the "Pooch" for far less. I don't give alot to the Falcon Club but what I do give goes directly to the Hockey program because like many of you I care and want to make it better. At the end of the season the change MUST be made. Sorry, but to me it's beyond obvious.

I really thought we would see more improvement this year after last season. If we don't sweep Clarkson this weekend there is something seriously wrong with this team.

Last weekend I glanced at the aging banners at the IceArena and it got me to thinking. Eighteen full seasons have come and gone since we last made the NCAA tournament.

Of the 44 members of the 4 major conferences only six have gone without NCAA berths throughout that 18 year span:

Alaska, Merrimack, Dartmouth, Union, Mich Tech and BG.

Ferris, Omaha, Northeastern, UMass, Quinipiac, Yale, Brown and Minnesota State have all made it once.
Western Mich, Vermont, Mass-Lowell, Princeton, Colgate, RPI, Anchorage and Duluth have made it twice.
Notre Dame and Providence have three trips.
Northern Michigan has had 4
Ohio State and St Lawrence have had 5
Lake Superior, Miami and St Cloud have had 6
Cornell, Harvard and Denver 7 each.
Clarkson has 10
Boston College, Colorado College, Wisconsin and N Dakota, 11 each
Maine and Boston University 13
New Hampshire and Michigan State have made 14 trips
Minnesota's made it 15 times
Michigan has gone EVERY single year.

Getting to 500 is NOT a goal, its only a stepping stone. Boosters, fans, alumni and students need to step up and scream "I'm mad as hell, and I'm not going to take it anymore!" The problems go MUCH deeper than THIS roster or THIS coach...the current coach and roster are both products of the administration's apathy towards hockey.

Thank you Freddie
Epitaph: When Sidney Ribeau came to BG the Hockey Program was a National Power, when he left it was abysmal.
If they wish to have this program continue and prosper, it is time for Carol Cartwright, Ed Whipple, Greg Christopher and the Trustees to step up and make a major commitment. If they wish to have the program die a slow death, proceed as you have.
They have a $ 8 million plan ( that may or may not be on hold) that will make for a good face lift; not a major commitment. They raised $ 14 mil for Basketball, but are afraid to fund raise for more than $ 4 mil for Hockey??
I have heard that Greg Christopher is disappointed that the fund raising for the ice arena is not progressing. What fund raising? Have any of you been asked to contribute. Would any contribute while Pooch is still the coach?

1. Fire Pooch 2. start a $ 14 million fund raiser for the renovated Hockey / Baseball/ Softball Facility 3. give the artist rendering to the new coaches for their recruiting trips.
