Student Section Chant

Post by murphdogg »

A couple weeks ago, there was an issue at the Michigan-Michigan State game where the fans at Yost were chanting "F--- you, State" during a certain infamous incident between a Michigan player and a few ex-Michigan State players and it was clearly audible on the television broadcast of the game. The Michigan administration was understandably quite upset about this and told its students that they would be removed from the game for using profanity.

Tonight, there were chants of "Chupp's a bi---!" several times during the game. Just curious, does anyone else think that may have been over the line? I was one of the people chanting it, but I felt like maybe I shouldn't have. After the game, I noticed the sign posted right next to the student section that said obscene language or behavior would not be tolerated.

So, where do we draw the line? I think we can all agree that the dreaded F-bomb would be crossing the line, but where exactly is it, and is it making the environment seem like a place that a parent would not want to bring their children for fear they would learn a few extra words?

Actually, about midway through the second period one of the people came and instructed the people leading the chant that they had to stop, and I didn't hear it again after that. There were also two signs confiscated. I was in the student section and when I looked around and saw all of the families at the game, I decided it wasn't appropriate to yell it, and I think that the people working the game did a good job of keeping it tame.

I'm not gonna lie I was kinda dreading this series for the past couple of weeks knowing Mr. Chupp would be returning and knowing that sometimes some students can take things way too far. I actually thought things would be much worse then they actually were.

I think going over the line is doing something numerous things, being told not to do it and still doing it, especially when you are in college and should know better. There was some wack job in the front row that kept hitting the boards really hard numerous times, and I saw was even told twice not to do it, not sure how he didn't get kicked out

From a student's perspective, I feel that anything that outright calls an opponent a b!tch, or something similar should not be allowed. Why? It's simple...these students represent the university and this can easily be frowned upon by outsiders, perhaps potential student athletes, who don't want to be associated with that. Had the students been more creative with it, it probably would've been allowed, but that was just an all-out wrong move, and those that stepped in to stop it did the right thing.

*edit: oh, and for those of you in the A-Band that were saying the same thing...you guys should definitely know better, you were in a uniform saying that you are an ambassador of the university...please think before you do that next time guys...

How about ANY vulgar language? I'm no prude: I can cuss like a motherf###er, but I don't normally do it en masse.

It's unappealing in it's portrayal of the fans being, in general, simpletons. BGSU was renowned for their creative and - dare I say - intellectual cheers designed to get at opponents - and it normally worked. There's intimidation at play. Vulgarity isn't intimidating.

Honestly, I was worried about all of the Chupp stuff too. The facilities manager actually made me show him what I had written on my whiteboard because he thought it was another "Chupp's a bitch" sign. What it actually said was "Chupp - ready to get FIXED?" and had a picture of a hockey player with a #8 jersey with one of those dog cones on his neck.

Apparently that was OK.

On the overall subject of vulgarity, I much prefer being witty and clean over being profane and looking like an idiot. Much more effective.

I've actually heard Chupp is a nice guy, so I didn't chant too much (he didn't really do much last night anyway). I think while questionable chants like Chupp's a b!tch aren't as bad a F you state. basically any words that can be said on tv should be ok.

If we are going to have a issue over the word Bitch then I guess should stop saying the phase See You Bye Bye JACK ASS because it's just the same.

If a child all ready knows the word then parents aren't doing there job. And if it's the first time a child hears it they don't know the meaning of it anyway. I have been to many other away games and Western Michigan for example, when a opposing team player goes in the box the student section screams Seey'a Bitch it's a word that it over used by most people.

Agreed. I never liked the jack ass chant. It sounds too much like the michigan crap. Plus the real question is...why are we calling him a jack ass for giving US A POWER PLAY????? We SHOULD be yelling, "HEY ___(insert his name)!!! THANKS FOR THE POWER PLAY!!!!"

What about the ubiquitous "Bullsh--" chant? It has become generally accepted, hell, we did it at my high school basketball games, but I think everyone would agree that that is worse than "See ya, bye bye, jackass!" or "Chupp's a bi---!".

Also, I would disagree that we shouldn't call their players jackasses after they commit certain penalties. They obviously aren't being jackasses for simple things like interference, but that totally uncalled for hit by Redmond after the whistle last night certainly would qualify him as a jackass. I thought for sure he was going to either get a 5 minute major or a 10 minute misconduct for that kind of cheap shot.

That would require a ref with a set of, well you know, that isn't afraid to give a player a 10 for mouthing off. Which Ferris did a lot last night when going to the box.

I understand where you're coming from. When an opposing player is being a cheap shot artist...yes, I'd say they are being jackasses!! I still wish we could come up with something more creative to yell. I just REALLY hate it that we sound like those low life weasels from AA...UGH!!! Taking cheers from them and acting like them is just lowering ourselves to their low class level.
