Happy Birthday BGSU ICE ARENA

Post by MACMAN »

If Im not mistaken today our rink turns 42! Dedicated on Feb 25th 1967 at a cost of 1.8 million dollars and two years to build with a seating capacity around 2900, untill renovations in 1989 when we got capacity for 5000. The hockey team began play in the MCHA until we became chater members of the CCHA in 1971.
Loads of good memories in that arena that was for a long period of time the PLACE TO BE on Friday and Saturday nights.
400k in renovations is not much to ask for to keep the tradition alive and strong at BGSU. We have a goalie who can set a shutout record this weekend, this BIRTHDAY WEEKEND! Try to make it to Western MI to support this teams efforts.
This is a birthday thread, please lets keep it positive.

I thought Mike Root scored the first goal as a varsity team.

In any case, HAPPY BIRTHDAY to the place that I have spent an unbelievable amount of time in. Between BGSU hockey, Youth Hockey, BGHS Hockey, years of taking the kids to skating lessons, and other unumerous events I've attended there....always feel like it's my second home!!

GO HOCKEY!!!
"Regarding BGSU, I would think their biggest strength is that they never give up, They never slow down and they battle hard even after the other team scores. We have to be on our game and never, ever take the foot off the gas for a second."

"BG was relentless. It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."

my sources say PJ Nyitray

and you thought bad refereeing was a new thing,
Back in '72 Chuck Gyles got a high sticking penalty,
very interesting since his stick had broken and he dropped it 20 seconds before the penalty call.
Ladies check page 110 of the 08-09 media guide,
Mrs Puckhead still loves that grim.

I stand corrected.

PJ Nyitary scored the first 'live' goal 2/25/67 as the CLUB team beat Illinois-Chicago 8-5. Root scored the first VARSITY goal 11/26/68.

Wasn't even born when it opened ... Kids??

As Far as I know Rick Allen '70 ( Sarnia) was here as a hockey player, but was given a football scholarship

"Doc Joe" Mancuso was one of the first goal judges.
His daughter Becky now teachers Canadian Studies at BG; kinda figures, eh?

Happy bierthday Ice Arena, we wish you many more. Bigger and better
