While it's great news......

It's great news that we will have Falcon Hockey next season yet we can not act like we are done. The hardest part is now before us, restoring Falcon Hockey permanently for the future. This will take everyone that has helped in the last week and many more. We have been given a chance and for that I thank Dr. Catwright, the Board of Trustees and AD Greg Christopher. It's now time to work with the University to take the next step. While a year seems like long time, it really isn't. We have a lot to do and not a lot of time to do it. However, Falcon Hockey Nation has proven in the last week it can get things done quickly and I fully anticipate it will come through over the next year. We, all of us and the University, need to all pull on the same end of the rope to accomplish this. As Vince Lombardi once said:

"Individual commitment to a group effort - that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work."

It also is what will make Falcon Hockey work again!!!!!!!!

Who locally can reach out to Coach P and put a "fan-plan" in place? Let's find out what (other than facility issues) the team needs from local, regional and national fans. The AD and Univeristy gave us one year, but if we don't take ownership of things and do what we can, our voices will be faded when it becomes crunch time again...I am in Indianapolis, but I can help from here if someone more locally spearheads things...

Just some brainstorming ideas...

I wonder if a solution lies in your avatar, hutch. I bet Brathaus could bring in a good chunk of cash over time with a "tip jar" for BG hockey. Or maybe all the bars downtown could have a month of buying paper hockey pucks to cover the walls, like they do with shamrocks for MDA and other causes.

The best place to start is for fans, especially those in BG, Toledo, and NWO to BUY SEASON TICKETS. This is the most important foundation in all of sports. After that, sponsors, donors, students, the right coaches, and the right recruits will fall in to place.

i also think you can donate money directly to the hockey program now as oppossed to the athletic department.

i am sure a tip jar at Brathaus or other local hockey watering holes could raise a decent chunck of money as well.

bgpuckster, I couldn't have said it better!!! :supz:

IN ONE WEEK, the firestorm of pressure, publicity, emails, phone calls, signs, Facebook, and web chatter that all of the GREAT fans and supporters of Falcon Hockey and the fans and supporters of all other groups and programs who benefit from the Ice Arena, changed what would have been a heart-breaking announcement into a reprieve that will allow us some time to continue to fight the good fight!!!

WAY TO GO FANS!! KEEP FIGHTING FOR FALCON HOCKEY!!!

What can I, an out of town fan, do to help keep the Hockey program an institution at BG?

I don't want to see just a one year reprieve and go thru this again next year.

For now, stay tuned as people organize.

In the meantime, if you haven't already done so, contact the AD and the President and let them know you're going to support the effort.

Dave Hackenberg was on the radio today- said he was very surprised by the decision to keep hockey and would be very surprised if it was more than a one year reprieve. Only 13 schools have D1 football, men and women's hoops and hockey and 3 are in the MAC. Didn't know that.

I sent a note of the AD, requesting that they change when and how season tickets are sold, many folks are hit by this economy. I asked that season tickets go on sale for hockey with in the next few weeks and that a payment plan be available to cover those costs from purchase date to the start of the season. I also asked that packages be made available such as
1. The whole season of course
2. First half only
3. second half only
4. mix of first and second half.

I just believe that ticket sales will be a huge factor in the next decision to be made and if Im not mistaken that starts in DEC. I dont know of any plan in place currently but a take a kid to the game plan would be nice so folks like Falcon Commander could buy some season GA tickets and just donate them, that way they know they are directly giving to Falcon hockey.

Is anything being planned / done for the 25th anniversary of the 1984 Natl Champ. BGSU Hockey Team? (There was for the 20th - by the University.)

25 years seems to be a typical Anniversay date to bring back memories for those who were around then, and to enlighten those who were not.

I really enjoyed the videos, the radio replay and the nice article written by 'AZIce' in "The Goal" topic. It would be great to have folks write their memories of that 'run' and make them available for all to read - somewhere?

Someone mentioned BG had played MSU at Lake Placid, and after beating them, the Spartan fans were all cheering for the Falcons the next game! Cool. It was also mentioned that all the BG fans were refered to by the locals as 'the Orange People'!

This Anniversary would be a great tie in to the current effort to Save BG Hockey.

A Party, a full page ad in the local papers, a Celebration of some sort to recognize the Anniversary and to show support for the continuation of Hockey at BG.

I don't know - what could be done . . . Newspaper ads with signatures of all who support the program, pictures of the '84 Team. . .
any ideas anyone?

Show our spirit, make them fear it, Fight for dear Bee Gee.

There was a pretty good celebration in '04 for the 20 year anniversary. I was pretty disappointed at the complete lack of mention this year for the 25th, but I've come to expect that sort of thing from this administration.

For those who are more involved with the team: would the alumni weekend this summer be a good time to try a hockey only fundraiser/celebration of some kind? Maybe we could rent out someplace like the Cla-Zel, show the game, have some old players talk, do an auction of some sort?

thats a good idea
It would be nice to have the team wear throwbacks for all the home games with a 25th anniversary patch.
nicer yet will be if we can fill the rink for the team like we did 25 years ago!

The hockey program is not allowed to do a "hockey only" fundrasier. Team specific events that raised a lot of money were stopped last year, due to the big event golf outing (or whatever it's called) that raises money for all of the teams. That is why the annual community/hockey alumni golf outing was discontinued, so I doubt if any "hockey only" fundraising event would be allowed.

I do think it would be awesome to do a celebration of some kind, however!! I love the idea of using the Cla-zel, showing the game and having players from that team talk!!
