aww i was going to do the na-na-na-na... but anyway, this is a good move for college hockey, UNO will gain geographic and more natural rivals then in the CCHA. with the hiring of the Blais he will turn the team into a good WCHA team within a few seasons.

Is there anyword on Huntsville. I suspect they're happy with this right now. It makes sense they will replace UNO in 2010.

The AP article I saw on it didn't say anything about UAH, just that Bemidji was joining duh Mavs in the WCHA.

With teams already announcing schedules for next season it's going to be awfully tough for UAH to put together much of a schedule as an independent in 09-10.

Besides that I think they would be a better fit in Atlantic Hockey where they would stand a better chance of being competitive much sooner than in the CCHA. That would give Atlantic Hockey 12 teams since they've already added Niagara and Robert Morris.

Scheduling an eleven team conference seems like it would be a nightmare (which is why the WCHA was so bent on getting another team to come in alongside Bemidji).

I thought there was another school that was interested in joining the CCHA?

If only we could trade Alaska for Michigan Tech...

UAH won't be an independent during 09-10. Niagara, Robert Morris, and Bemidji will be joining their new conferences for the 10-11 season, so there is one more season of CHA hockey. I'm not sure why that story from the S-T says the CHA dissolved after last season, Bemidji and Niagara have both released their schedules, and are still in the CHA, listing CHA conference games. Atlantic Hockey currently has 10 teams, and when Niagara and RMU join it'll be 12, so no way does Atlantic Hockey take a 13th team in UAH unless they were to lose a team to another conference or a school folds their team. UAH best chance at Atlantic Hockey would have been the WCHA taking Air Force instead of UNO, leaving Atlantic Hockey with 11 teams.

My guess is we'll hear UAH applying to the CCHA, and shortly after we'll hear they are accepted. this is the most logical choice unless something big happens.

Have you ever heard of the Alaska exemption? Why give that up?

This is good for us because there is very little difference distantce wise between a trip to NMU and one to UAH.

Alaska exemption? Does Cole Magner get to suit up when we go to Fairbanks? I'm afraid I'm unaware of this exemption you speak of.

My concern with having Alaska in the CCHA is that it costs a bunch of money for a cash-strapped program like ours to have to charter a plane to travel up there. Plus, the jet lag from traveling that far probably puts us at something of a competitive disadvantage. Not to mention that the WCHA has the other Alaskan team...

last time I looked, Alaska was really far west..so much so that even Magoo would see they have nothing CENTRAL going on.

The Alaska exemption allows a team that travels to Alaska to play to exempt up to two games from their total for the year. For hockey, I believe the total games allowed per season is 36. When we travel to Alaska, we are allowed 38.

Last I knew, Alaska paid the travel costs for visiting teams.

You know, the CCHA should use this as an opportunity to convince bigger schools with great club teams to move up to the varsity level. Schools like Kentucky, Illinois, or Penn State would be great fits for the CCHA. I understand that hockey is a big financial commitment and maybe the money isn't there in a lot of places, but you can't tell me that these schools aren't making big money off sports right now (especially Penn State who draws 100k+ for home football games)

Careful what you wish for... you see an Illinois and Penn State and all of a sudden you hear whispers of a Big 10 hockey conference w/ ND, minus WMU, Miami, and BG.
