Hockey Program Safe for 3-5 Years?!?!?
Although Cartwright declined to say how long the fundraising campaign would last, most sources have said the program will have 3-5 years to raise the needed money.

That's the way that I understood it. That should help a great deal with recruiting!Redwingtom wrote:Although Cartwright declined to say how long the fundraising campaign would last, most sources have said the program will have 3-5 years to raise the needed money.

You're reading it wrong. It doesn't mean that hockey is only safe for the next 3-5 years, ...IT'S SAFE....PERIOD!!! LONG TERM!! FOREVER!!!! Endowing the scholarships insures that the hockey program will continue indefinitely!! They wouldn't be fundraising millions of dollars for a program and ice arena that will only be around for 3-5 more years.Redwingtom wrote:Although Cartwright declined to say how long the fundraising campaign would last, most sources have said the program will have 3-5 years to raise the needed money.

The 3-5 years is the fundraising. If, for example, I pledge $1000...I can make it in payments over 3-5 years!!!
PEOPLE, THIS IS THE NEWS WE'VE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR!!
Now, you people who have NOT renewed your hockey season tickets, need to do so RIGHT NOW!!!! Also, those people who dropped their tickets years ago, need to re-up their tix, RIGHT NOW!!!
"Regarding BGSU, I would think their biggest strength is that they never give up, They never slow down and they battle hard even after the other team scores. We have to be on our game and never, ever take the foot off the gas for a second."

"BG was relentless. It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."

BG has basically gone from fighting off a 6 on 3 with the other teams goalie pulled, to even strength. But the game isn't over just yet. That said, I think things are on the right track. They wouldn't announce an effort if they didn't basically know what was out there to generate. And beyond this private company, which to my mind is window dressing for political factions not friendly to Hockey, she likely trusts what Jack Vivian has surely told her. You can't look that man in the face and BS him, he has that whole "truth scope" thing going on.
What we can do now is take a deep breath and relax. The degree of uncertainty the announcement will take off the table, will draw more people to it. People will invest more in a program with a future. You can start a coaching search. The whole machine can now stir to life and move forward.
This is, in very real terms, the start of the first season of the second era of Falcon Hockey. This is a clean break with the past and the start of a drive towards one single and obvious goal: a national title. The CCHA, intra-state domination, CCHA tourney, home ice domination, a return of jammed full arenas, that all comes along the way.
Glory in hockey is the manifest destiny of Bowling Green State University. More than football, more than basketball, this is about bringing back a birthright to this University.
How old are Scott or Jeff Weiss' kids? We could start the new era by tossing members of each generation onto the ice after the first goal?

Re: Hockey Program Safe for 3-5 Years?!?!?
Ive been chomping at the bit waiting for this information.
This is it folks, we have demonstrated that Falcon Hockey has a great fan base, and even stronger alumni base. Now we have been given ample time to raise the money to turn the rink in to the place to play college hockey, and turn this team around, making them again the Contenders and most talked about, toughest team in the CCHA.
We have been given the gift of time. TIme for each of us to give the money we can to this great program.
The count I see right now, we need 8 million more to make the rink a real show place, and 20 million for the team. We can do it.

I'm sorry, but I feel as if you're yelling at me.
And I agree this is tremendous news but I will wait at least until the money starts pouring in before I feel 100% confident for the near future. That being said, nothing can be guaranteed forever.

For those of us that live a couple hours away and don't have hockey season tix, go to a few extra games this year. I plan on bringing the Freaklings up for at least 5 games this coming season...we usually can only make 2-3 but this is so important that I'll make time to get to more games.
Fantastic news, without a doubt.

Re: Hockey Program Safe for 3-5 Years?!?!?
Freak's comment brings up a point I wondered about earlier this year.
There has been a lot, decades worth, of pent-up frustration with BGSU over hockey, we all know the reasons, so I'll not recite them all here.
However, it's over. The alumni and supporters are going to finally be able to securely dump the required money into the program. The Arena is going to finally get the renovations required. The previous coach is gone. The slate of standing issues is about to be utterly wiped clean.
There are a LOT of people I think, myself included to some extent, who had hope either die or wane to the point of just pulling away. Hope is rekindled. If there are years of rebuilding to go, at least I feel like this puts BGSU back into the fight legitimately. The Falcons are no longer doomed to be a fallen power living on faded memories. The program isn't at risk for being ended.
I will use the term again: Manifest Destiny.

Falcon Fanatic, you got it! This is tremendous news. Buy tickets; join Falcon Club /designate hockey etc.
Sell the arena out.
And those who can give to this upcoming fundraising effort to bring us back to the top of the hockey world, please be ready. All gifts will be needed to reach our goal.
Somebody mentioned above the private company review as window dressing. Not at all- this is the same company who did the preliminary work for the Building Dreams campaign. That one turned out pretty well. This is a step you do when you are attempting things at this level. This will be a major campaign. This will be a long, hard road. I hope some of us can now turn the page and get us rolling.
Sell the arena out.
To me there are no longer any "barriers"- only opportunities. We need every single donor to step forward when this thing goes and get on board. The Stroh Center attracted a number of major donors; I know we have some out there for hockey. I can hardly wait to see who might lead the way. This is a commitment on many levels by so many people including university leadership. And our super fans and alums.
I spoke to some players yesterday and they are very excited about all the developments. These seniors will be remembered 25 years from now like Garry Galley, Dave Ellet and Gino Cavallini are today. Maybe they won't win any title- but they will be the men that saw us through and led the way for the return of Falcon hockey to the top. I salute these young man and the other upperclassmen. We will win some- and we will lose some. But we will never forget this group.

I take it as awesome news. It's been great to see all of the support in the community and beyond for the program. This whole thing has really made me appreciate what a special thing we have here and I truly can't wait for the season to begin. We have to continue to voice our support for the program and hopefully everyone involved with the decision making at the University will listen.
Go Falcons! I hope we have a great season!!!

Re: Hockey Program Safe for 3-5 Years?!?!?
The "building dreams" campaign was a farce in some ways. They counted the same money again and again from projects that had nothing to do with the "branded" effort. If a winning lottery ticket had blown into the development office, they'd have called it part of the campaign.
I think the company was there to rubber-stamp things as to provide an "objective" opinion so that academics and others couldn't argue Cartwright took the word of an "insider." She paid for it likewise as to avoid spending University money on justifying spending time and money on hockey while people were being laid off.
In the end, who cares, it is over, and the process is moving to the next phase.

GEEZ Nathan....can you just be happy for hockey for a few minutes?!?!?!?!!!!
We've lived through months and months of frustration and we finally get some positive news, so let's just enjoy some HAPPY HOCKEY NEWS for a change!!!
I just spent the evening talking with Jack Vivian. I am VERY confident that things are going to work out fine, thanks to all that he is doing and how hard he has worked to show the university what had to be done to save Falcon hockey!! YES, we have a ways to go, but all the wheels are on the right track and the train is headed in the right direction FINALLY!!!

Re: Hockey Program Safe for 3-5 Years?!?!?
How about just being happy for BG and with BG, NWLB? Building Dreams a farce in some ways? Wow......I have no idea what to say.
Other than that is not true. And an unfair statement. Picking at something/anything can be done, but geez....
And the opinion on the company asked to assist with Building Dreams and hockey- they are/were providing real information. Real world real time stuff so the Building Dreams campaign- and hopefully hockey campaign- would/will succeed.
For a farce, it sure had a huge number of donors and helped a lot of students, faculty and staff- today and tomorrow. Perfect? No. The biggest and best effort in University fund raising history? Easily. Completed during a hugely difficult time but still beating a goal that most said we would never meet?
I would be getting excited and ready to help what you like to help. Maybe that is hockey. We have enough mountains to climb for the hockey campaign without calling a $146 million campaign a farce- even just "in some ways".
But if we can't get happy about this opportunity for hockey....
So let's go! Go Falcon hockey and Capt. Page!
Go Falcons!

Re: Hockey Program Safe for 3-5 Years?!?!?
Marta: I'm perfectly happy. Exceedingly so. I think I made that clear. This is a pretty historic moment for BGSU Hockey. And frankly that has me excited about BGSU hockey for the first time since before Buddy was fired. Anyway, you know I've never been the rah-rah type for the most part.
FalconFan1: I'm not dumb enough to argue about how great all the money, buildings, and endowments are. That isn't my point. I'm just amused at how Ribeau talked about a massive capital campaign literally before he ever got to campus. And 13 years later, the only thing that really came out of it, was collecting every single donation, lumping it into one brand name, and acting like they started Building Dreams and THEN got the money. That, in my view, is a farce. They couldn't raise the kind of money they hoped for, so they gathered every trace of donation extending way beyond anything connected to Building Dreams, then said "look what we did!" I'm not knocking the money raised or the good it will do. Why would I? Maybe it rains on somebody's happy time, but then again all Building Dreams is really about is marketing. I won't begrudge them their fluff if it helps.
