Can't wait to go to Yost!

Scroll down all the way to the bottom and read the section entitled: "Something's Got to Give."

I remember going to our last game against Michigan last year and being blown away by how rude Michigan fans were. I was physically threatened several times for simply being there.

It is kind of a shame that a school with the kind of traditions in hockey like Michigan is having problems like this with their students. I hate them, but they do have great tradition and impressive atmosphere at games.

Reading this, though, does make me proud of our students. Outside of "Who's he? Nobody!" and "See ya! Bye bye! Jackass!" I've never really noticed any problem 'chants' from our students and fans. These chants aren't even problems, they rule! We should be very proud of ourselves. Seriously!

I also liked what someone did at Saturday's game. With about 2 seconds left in a BG power play, they would yell "What's that smell?" followed shortly by the announcement "Miami back at full strength." That was great, and I'd never really heard it before.

That being said, I can't wait to go to Yost in two weeks. I'm curious if anyone else here will be going. I think it would be a lot more fun (and safe!) if we all went to get tickets together before the game. Maybe we can organize something.

I do reccomend, though, that you spend a few extra dollars on the more expensive ticket. The GA's in the endzones are TERRIBLE seats. I actually paid twice last time just so I didn't have to sit there. Just a friendly suggestion!

they are quite vulgar, but at the same time; what an evironment they create! Sure they could do it in a much better way but that is impressive to see all those students in unison with thier taunting.

This weekend there was me and some other guy as the only ones saying "Thats debatable, they still suck" 2 people. F'ing TWO. ok ok ok the students are on break but c'mon, maybe 10 of those students have been fans long enough to know about and have taken part in the history anyway. I wish we could be as "hostile" as they are, but while keeping the class that we have.

Ok, I'll take the bait. Since you are a student, I know you probably don't understand what it was like back when BG hockey was BG HOCKEY. That was when the Ice Arena was known for class. Yes, I'm proud to say that most BG hockey fans still have class, but Section E is working real hard at tearing that away. More and more the Ice Arena sounds like Yost with the vulgarity and other classless chears you hear (that are usually stolen from Michigan anyhow). If you want class, clean up the cheers/chants.

Oh and by the way it's THAT'S DEBATABLE.

Am I on my soap box often about this, you bet. Ant it's because I have pride in BG and am very concerned with what I see/hear out of (mainly) the students who think they have class.

I don't have a problem with the Who's He? Nobody. But the Jackass has to go, what's wrong with just See Ya (that's how it started - BTW). It just seems to me like they have to use sucks in every chant. I like the enthusiasm the students have if they could just clean it up a bit.

You know FCF, I have a lot of respect for your enthusiasm, but I have to disagree with you 100% on this one.

To compare what our students do at games with what goes on at Yost because we use chants involving the word "suck" is not only wrong, but a bit short-sighted. We could use a lot uglier words, and I won't deny that a few often do. But, you can not lump all of our student fans into one group like this and I WILL NOT LET YOU.

Sure, there are plenty of things that our students do at sporting events that can be offensive to some. I personally don't like the "bullshit" chants at basketball and football games. Its disrespectful and pointless. But, rarely, if ever do I hear it at hockey games. Yes, we yell at the officials, but I'd be willing to bet that so do you. Thats HOCKEY!

Yes, by comparison, our students do have class. Our student hockey fans do respect our traditional chants, and whether it started out that way or not, the penalty cheer does now include the word "jackass." If you have a problem with that, start a movement. But, I would be willing to bet that the movement would be very small and short-lived.

I'm not trying to come down on you FCF, and I hope you don't take it that way. I simply will not let you degrade our students for going out to support Falcon hockey. Most of the students that go to the games right now are the same ones that have supported our teams through some very tough years and they are die-hards. They are not simply your average drunkards that show up to ride the bandwagon like I suspect is the case in Michigan.

I hear what you are saying, I guess I just always see the bad...I'll take your comments under consideration on saturday and try to make new judgements.

No, it's probably not fair to lump them all together, it just concerns me that if we don't continue to strive to get better, we'll easily fall into that hole! I didn't catch the what's that smell cheer, that's pretty good and I would consider very usable in the future. now, if that changes to "Miami back at full strength", and they still smell like s--t, I'd have a problem. they both basically say the same thing, but the first (and one used in the game) has alot more class than the latter.

I can actually remember when the jackass chant started. it was mid 90s - when we weren't too good...

So, keep coming to games and stay loud (and classy) and I'll try to stay off the soap box (heck, maybe there isn't really one to stand on). Continue to recognize good shifts, and LETS GO FALCONS!

I agree with FlagCity Falcon. We don't need to use JACKASS to make the chant work. We need to clean up our act with some of our chants. Saying they're just students is an excuse.

Expect class - get class. Expect trash - get trash .

I think we're better than that.

I'd say those type of chants really fit the sport. Hockey isn't figure skating and the fans mirror that. Hockey is a rough, tough game and that's the kind of fans you have. Hell, at the ND game there was a priest sitting behind me that did EVERY chant.

Yost is an awesome environment

I've always enjoyed going up to Yost for the hockey games. That atmosphere is great and I love the old barn look to the place. Hard to believe that was once a train station. It truly is one of the best environments in college sports and you can always expect an exciting fast paced game there. We played hard the last 2 seasons up there and I have a good feeling about next week up there, I think Scotty will finally get the Michigan monkey off his back and get his first W against the Wolverines that weekend. I am glad though that I sit in the press box at the games there

In reference to Notre Dame....that is the worst environment for hockey I've seen. Been there 5 times now and everytime the crowd was dull as could be. I know its a football school, but damn, the students could actually move every once in awhile. They actually have a good hockey program and a team to be excited about. I can see why ND has struggled this year, the priests are about the only ones making noise there. TERRIBLE!!

not even from an anti-"jackass"/"sucks"/(fill in the blank) standpoint, I think that "See ya!" and "That's debatable!" really DO work just fine on their own. As was said, it gets the same point across, and its quick. That's what we went with when I was going to games in the early to mid 90's, and they worked just fine.
Next thing you know, someone's going to defend holding up Hustlers instead of newspapers during the starting lineups!! (Actually, that's not a bad idea! Hmmm... )

Am I getting old now that I've taken a stance against obscenities in chants twice this week already? And when did I become such a hypocrite? :?

FCF- I see your point, but I think BO is right here. Comparing jackass and suck to anything wrong with that they say at the yost is laughable at best. I dont see anything with that, its been done for years and hasn't escelated(sp?) to anything worse.

And yes I do know what it was like when BG hockey was BG HOCKEY. Sure I'm young, but ive been going to games since I was 2. I am well aware of what BG hockey was is and will be. I've watched us be at the top, down to the bottom and now climbing back up. Show me a person even twice my age in the ice arena that has watched this team more than I have and I'll buy them dinner. I am more than slightly miffed at that comment but I will say nothing more.

I think our students DO have class at games. Sure they aren't golf fans or polite by any means to the opposing team or refs, but do you honestly believe that such a goal is really obtainable? I think your exceptations of 'class' are a bit unrealistic and are not only impossible to reach, but would result in a very easy road game for the other teams. No offense, because I understand your point of view i just disagree with it, but I hope that our student section or the rest of the fans never become as "classy" as that. We'd become known as the cupcake arena or something.

Ever been to osu? For as good of a team as they have there, they dont draw anymore fans than we do. That arena looks like an empty warehouse with all the empty space there durrig a game. Even the playoffs last year they couldnt sell 5,000 tickets, pathetic. You have more teams than just football buckeyes, way to be such loyal fans.....

I could eat about 24 of those. Wonder how many McMetz could eat? Sounds like a fun contest there.
