Way to go Garry!!!!
"Regarding BGSU, I would think their biggest strength is that they never give up, They never slow down and they battle hard even after the other team scores. We have to be on our game and never, ever take the foot off the gas for a second."

"BG was relentless. It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."

His decision leaves everybody in a bad situation. However, he had no choice, it was the right thing to do. The players, and fans are going to suffer for a while, but I believe that his decision exposes the unsavory practices of the owners and will lead to new ownership. The owner, is probably wishing he never started the snowball down the hill
Good for Garry for doing the right thing. We need more leaders like him.

He likely did the right thing, but I think it would have been fun for him to go public and tell the owner to basically "Eff off!" and just keep coaching the same way until fired. Might have gotten more publicity.

Hhhmmm. We're looking for a coach, he's looking for a job. He's an alum and former NHL player and his son is coming here to play. Just saying.

I'm not sure he would allowed to coach at BGSU...as in, I don't think he ever finished his degree. I'm pretty sure you have to have a college degree to coach here. I might be wrong about this, but I don't think I am, as I discussed this topic with someone quite awhile ago.bgpuckster wrote:Hhhmmm. We're looking for a coach, he's looking for a job. Why wouldn't it be? Degree requirements exist for all sorts of jobs.Redwingtom wrote:Really? That'd be pretty bad if they didn't hire a guy just because he didn't have a degree. I guess I can understand where they're coming from if that actually is a requirement, but it still makes no sense in my opinion.Falcon Fanatic wrote:

If Scotty Bowman wanted to apply for the head coaching job they'd tell him he can't apply because he doesn't have a degree? I realize that'd never happen but it's still non-sense to write off a great potential coach just because he didn't finish college. You don't have to know how to do calculus and chemistry to coach a hockey team. I'd be surprised if there's one coach in the NHL right now other than Bylsma who has a college degree.

MY guess is BGSU recruited one galley, and we will be getting two, the ground work is in place.

For the NHL I see your point. But there is a larger purpose for college athletics, namely that (in principle, though I recognize college sports have long ago sold out) the athletes on the team are ultimately there to earn a college degree. College sport should require its coaches to have degrees.

http://www.Hockeydraftcentral.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; says this about Galley:
"Left Bowling Green after his junior year to pursue pro hockey career, but remained enrolled at the school and completed his degree during off-seasons of early NHL career. "

Re: Garry Galley makes a stand
Two points, first I agree that a sheep skin should be and is a requirement to coach a Div 1 NCAA team. Second, I think that having a coach at this level with his son as a goal tender is a recipe for disaster.
Re: Garry Galley makes a stand
So the fact that the coach doesn't have a degree is keeping the players on the team from getting a degree? To rule out a candidate from coaching college hockey because he doesn't have a degree would be like the NHL not allowing coaches who never played in the NHL to coach. That would leave guys like Ken Hitchcock, John Tortorella and Mike Babcock, all of whom have won Stanley Cups, out of the league. I definitely understand your point but I just think that the best coach should be hired regardless of whether or not he ever graduated college. Maybe I'm in the minority, but I could honestly care less if the coach passed the 10th grade. I just want the best coach for the program.PGY Tiercel wrote: For the NHL I see your point. I definitely believe that a coach should make sure that his players are making the grade in the classroom. I just don't think that the fact that a coach doesn't have a degree is going to somehow downgrade the program and the inhibit the student-athletes.
A coach's primary job is to build a winning program, IMO. Plus, I've never known too many college hockey players to have a problem with graduating, as long as they stayed 4 years. Which is more than you can say for sports like basketball and football.
