NCAA Title Game

Post by WhoDeyBG »

Michigan lost 3-2 in OT to Minn.-Duluth, who was the team that BG ousted in 4 OT's at Lake Placid in 1984. This is Minn.-Duluth's first hockey title. Just an FYI...

And this was only the SECOND appearance in the national final since they lost in 4 overtimes to the Falcons in '84! I was rooting for them all the way!!! CONGRATS BULLDOGS!!!!
"Regarding BGSU, I would think their biggest strength is that they never give up, They never slow down and they battle hard even after the other team scores. We have to be on our game and never, ever take the foot off the gas for a second."

"BG was relentless. It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."

Two immediate thoughts:

(1) Its great to see programs like UMD reach these levels. Its a reminder of what we should be able to achieve
(2) Its great to see the Big 10 lose, especially to a program like UMD

This is a great article on Bill Watson, a player on the '84 Minn-Duluth team that lost to BG! He is now a volunteer assistant coach on the team. It's interesting to read about what he went through because of the loss.

Congrats again to the UMD Bulldogs! I was rooting for you all the way!!!!! :supz:

So ... the CCHA title game was down to two MAC schools. No Big 10 schools.

Neither Minnesota nor Wisconsin advanced to the second round of the WCHA tournament.

UMD beat Michigan in the national title game.

The Hobey Baker award went to a Miami player.

Yet ... the Big 10 hockey schools are so elite that they need their own conference ... yeah, right

Yes, congrats to the Bulldogs. They played excellent tournament hockey and atoned for a lot of frustration. Besides losing the 4-overtime classic final to the Falcons in '84, in the next Frozen Four of '85 they lost a 3-overtime, 6-5 semi-final match against RPI up at Joe Louis.

Actually, I thought the Frozen Four this year was the most interesting and competitive in a long time. Excellent game plans and excellent execution. Besides, I enjoy Gary Thorn and that goof Melrose on the play-by-play.

Congrats UMD. It was a great game to watch.

Barry Melrose "I would pay the price of admission to watch this power play on a regular bases."

UMD's power play was incredible against UND and Michigan. In total control, made defense play on their heels. It reminded me of watching BG trying to kill penaltys against UND and UM and how they would get five, six, or seven shots in a power play. Nice to see them take a dose of their own medicine.
