BG ties vs. UConn on Sat.

BG played an awful 1st period, but rebounded in the 2nd to tie it up 2-2 going into the 3rd. After trading goals, BG went ahead with 2:02 to go, only to have UConn tie it up 11 seconds later! Ended up a tie after a scoreless OT. UConn "won" the shootout that doesn't mean anything.

All in all it was a good effort, but just TOO many penalties. It's the first weekend though, and it's good to have hockey back. On the road the next two weekends.

I thought we played better tonight in the tie than we did in last nights win.

Not a good tie....Uconn is a middle of the pack AH team. These first two weekends should really have been all wins.

Agreed Drago......

I like the fight we had after being down 2 goals early and battled in the 3rd to eventually what looked like a game winning goal with 2 minutes left.

Stay out of the penalty box we win that with ease.

If you don't compete hard for all 60 minutes in hockey, you will lose. I'm sure Coach Bergeron will use that as a teaching point this week.

Just only two seasons ago I would have had to agree with Drago's middle of the Pack statement. Not now. These Huskies, with the talent pool they have are a top 4 AHA team (three ties away from 4th last season). They will find themselves based upon what they have now, and new expanded recruiting battling for #1 in over the next few years.
With that said, there is still really not a "good" excuses for a tie, but look what an exceptional goalie from Bentley did to Mi over two nights. AHA is stronger than the casual observers believes, and have a very sound hockey product week in and out.

And I'm quite sure that all of us that could make it, did. I made it Friday, but had a prior commitment Saturday. I'm sure there are others on this board in the same situation. The people on this board support the Falcons to the best of their ability.

Also, it was BG's fall break so that took quite a few students away. The student section was PACKED for the exhibition game and was maybe 1/3 to 1/2 full on Friday when I was there. Not a good weekend for a home opener being over fall break, but it is what it is.

That being said, it is nice to open the season unbeaten. 2-0-0 would be great, but I am still happy with 1-0-1.

I am so sorry......we were in Kalamazoo to watch that fiasco! Not many BG fans there either other than parents. I think GC has PO'd many more fans than some on this board think, with this whole athletic program. It wasn't long ago we would have a great following on a beautiful day at WMU. :-k

musicman - didn't know it was fall break that explains the student section. Still sad to only get 1300 people.

Factman - Agreed, no excuses needed on your end, atleast you were out supporting a falcon program on the road even, rather then sitting at home watching the suckeyes blow a lead in the 2nd half or better yet playing angry birds on their iPad.

I disagree. I think this was a GREAT tie actually. We probably should have won both games but the fact we came back and tied against a talented team shows that this BG team has a lot more to offer than in the past. We've been at the bottom of the CCHA for a few years now so you can't expect a young team to come out and dominate right out of the gate. I'm really encouraged by this first weekend and I think as the season goes on we're going to see a program that is sprinting in the right direction.

On a side note, I haven't met Coach Bergeron just yet but from everything I hear about him I can't help but get increasingly happy about this hire. Great recruiter, great coach, great guy = BG success VERY soon.

Uconn is not a "talented team." They do not even give athletic scholarships for ice hockey. I agree that it was good they fought back, but bottom line these games were scheduled to get wins. Tying that team isn't a positive performance.

Do not blame GC for people not going to WMU to watch that football game. A few years ago we put a winning product on the field... a few years ago gas wasn't consistently above $3.00... in all my years being here traveling with the football team, the only places that we had a good following were Toledo, Miami, and maybe EMU... aside from going to the big name places like Pittsburgh or the game we hosted at Cleveland our fans don't travel that well... I have witnessed it with my own eyes

You can be down on the team all you want but from what I saw last night this team never gave up. Down 0-2 it would've been easy to put your head down and coast to a loss. They fought hard and came back. Way too many penalties though. It was actually refreshing to see our team play defense and protect Hammond. The shots he faced were limited. Last year he was facing 30-40 shots per game. It was also nice to see something resembling an offense. We controlled and passed the puck fairly well and have scoring options. I like what I've seen from Carpenter so far.

Fall break tends to get in the way of drawing big crowds... And all this baloney about tying a program that doesn't give out athletic schollies? They may not call them "athletic scholarships", but those kids are NOT paying their way through school. UConn is a Big East school in all other sports, and beating them in any other sport would be a MAJOR win for one of our programs.

With that said, I caught the second game on the video feed. I thought we looked VERY young and kind of slow. We didn't execute on special teams, although we did a nice job of maintaining possession both with the man advantage and in 5-on-5. We haven't controlled play like that very often over the last several years, which makes me optimistic for the future. Once these freshmen adjust to the speed of the college game and get some time in a college strength program I think we'll have a fun team to watch.
