Rochester Institute of Technology has announced that its hockey team will move up to NC$$ Division I. They'll be playing a D-I independent schedule next season, then join the Atlantic Hockey Association for the 2006-2007 season.
RIT's head coach is Wayne Wilson, BG '84.
I hope Wayne and Scott Paluch are discussing schedules for BG vs. RIT.

I saw that the other day and thought the same thing about Paluch and Wayne trying to get together for games. Always good to see another D1 hockey program.

I used to live in Rochester. A couple of thoughts and notes:

-- RIT could be very successful. Rochester is a large market -- bigger than Toledo -- and there are no Division I programs anywhere near there. Also, hockey is popular there. The Rochester Americans go back nearly 50 years in the AHL. And youth hockey is a big deal in the community.

-- This could trigger a sort of arms race in Rochester, home to a bunch of Division III schools: Rochester, St. John Fisher, Nazareth, SUNY Brockport and SUNY Geneseo. Supposedly, all these universities used to have a quiet agreement that none would go Division I. Guess that agreement is out the window.

-- RIT teams also wear brown ("burnt umber") and orange. Guess we won't be alone anymore, at least in hockey.

I think I heard that Wayne Wilson had changed the hockey jerseys to orange and BLACK after he got there... Same excuse as here....costs too much to get brown....

This is big news here in Rochester. We are the second largest market in the country (after Ft. Lauderdale) without any D1 sports. People are psyched.

I hadn't seen whether the BG game(s) would be here or at BG. All I heard was that there was a verbal agreement to play in 2005-6.

If it's in Rochester, I'll make the pre-game arrangements.

Very cool. Its a shame Findlay bailed out of D1, we could have founded a new traveling thropy for teams wearing Orange!

It's RIT, not Rochester. "Rochester" refers to the University of Rochester, a private university that's way more prestigious than RIT (and knows it).

Common football opponents for Rochester are Chicago, Carnegie Mellon, Case Western Reserve, that sort of thing. That gives you an idea how Rochester sees itself.

Seriously -- anyone who makes the trip to Rochester must try one of these.

Haven't been to that place yet. Dinosaur Bones, Jack Astor's, Beale Street,....done those.
I was driving through an area, I think it may have been on Blossom Road, and noticed some interesting sculpture and art work - looked like an old factory was taken over by studios. Know anything about that?

The only place I know with public sculpture is on University avenue near Goodman. They created the "art-walk" there. There are a couple of old buidings that are now artist studios.

If you want to try some good barbecue, almost as good as Dinosaur without the interminable wait for a table, try "Sticky-Lips". It's on Culver near Main Street. In the summer, there's Nola Barbecue on lake avenue right by the beach. You can sit out on the balcony and see the lake, but the barbecue isn't as good as the others.
