Home Ice Advantage

Home Ice Advantage. I am no talking about the playoff home ice advantage, I am talking about every home game.To me, home ice is more than just being in your own town, on your own rink. It is about being surrounded by your fans. When the crowd is cheering for you, and the place is going crazy, you will more than likely play better.
What I want to know is, do you think we have home ice advantage?
I know college students show up to games, and they are cheering and chanting during the game...but they are the only ones doing that when the game is going on. Everyone else, who is not a student, waits for a goal or something to happen to start cheering. I think we, as a BG community, can make that ice rink get loud. It is small, and it echos like crazy, so if every fan follows the college section's cheers/chants, it would be an even bigger home ice advantage. Now I am not going to name names...but when I have traveled to some of the bigger schools for some away games, everyone in their rink is making noise. I had a hard time hearing myself think because of what they were doing during the game. Even when they have some students and non students come down to BG, they can make more noise than us. With their constant "booop....boooooop..." during their penalty kills,( You all should know who I am talking about now) and their constant chants they do, it is kind of sad.
All I really want do is make the hockey team have a huge home ice advantage, and I think if everyone participated and made the place get loud, it would be more fun. When it is more fun, more people start to show up, and then it gets louder, and then we win more games...and who knows, we could be seeing a first round tournament here in BG at the end of the season.
So, feel free to comment and discuss if I am crazy, or if there are other people that agree with me. Don't be afraid to post...

Once upon a time we had a student section that was inventive, clever, witty, etc. w/o being vulgar. I know, FF and I were a part of it. Now we have a student section that copies other school's chants, or when they do come up with something original it has a tendency to be vulgar. I truly have no desire to join in with them because of it.
I will join in if:
- The student section starts coming up with their own, witty, non-vulgar material
- The student section becomes as cohesive as they once were. To do so, someone will need to write down the standard chants and when and how they are given. When the pep band is there they need to work together with them.
When these things happen and the whole student section is on the same page, you will start to see the rest of the arena join in.

Bergeron openly talks about the times he came to the Ice Arena while a member of the opposition and how the place rocked and how he hopes to one day bring us back to that passion.
I agree with BGFan. Stop the vulgarities in the chants. How? Kick out the people yelling the vulgarities, prepare for the onslaught of students complaining in the BG News and continue to enforce the rules and eventually in a year or so, we could be rid of the vulgarities.

BGhockeyfan94 you write amazingly well for a Freshman and it's good to see you taking some leadership to help "Bring Back the Glory!" I'm assuming that the 94 in your name is for 1994 the year you were born, making you a Freshman then. To the others on the board, the current students do not remember how it was in the late '70's and early to mid 80's. The question then becomes, how do we educate them on the parameters without stifling creativity? I think BGFan is onto something. Maybe we need cards giving examples of the older cheers with a clear warning about NO vulgarities. In fact, I think a few years ago someone did have the old cheers printed up. Maybe a preseason fan night or the exhibition game might be a place to try it out. BGhockeyfan94, I urge you to start a BG Hockey student fan page on Facebook, if there is not one already, and promote attendance as well as learning the cheers. To the "experienced" people on this board, I urge all of us to come up with some of the good ole cheers we can remember. Maybe we start a new thread for just that. Thoughts?

Point towards the opposing goalie and yell
"Sieve! Sieve! Sieve! Sieve! Sieve!"
-OR-
Using a broad sweeping motion of the arm towards the goalie and yell "Sieve!"" and continue this pattern repeatedly.
One word - no vulgarities. See? It can be done!

Bring back the Section A "Bleacher Creatures".
It was great having student section A responding back and forth with student section E

That is actually a good idea. I will work on promoting that, and try to put people over there.

What chants do you want to see get removed and replaced?

Please stop the stupid "C-Ya" when an opponent goes into the penalty box! I believe UM started doing this first in the CCHA. Although I'm pretty sure they stole it from another school.
And on our goal count, please just leave it after several "We Want More!" "It's all Your Fault" and "Seive" don't need to be on the end of this. Again, our original goal count didn't have these and we're just copying other schools in doing so.

THE BEST columnist the BG News ever had.
I was just thinking about him the other day as I was reading the opinion section of the BG News and thinking how sad it is that the current students didn't have someone like him writing columns.
