STUDENTS: The Bowling Green Falcon hockey team has received tremendous support from its students this season, but the student section needs to eliminate the profanities from its chants.
A number of fans - including parents with young children - have expressed their disappointment and unhappiness over the profanities, and their concerns are legitimate.
Ice Arena and athletics departments officials need to strongly encourage the students to eliminate the profanities.
We understand those officials are in a difficult position because they want the student support and attendance, but the students still can be just as supportive without the profanities.
Student leadership and the Falcon Fanatics need to address the issue and police themselves.
It's even hypocritical of the arena and athletics department to have their public address announcer read a pre-game statement about showing good sportsmanship if it's going to allow the profanities.
Falcon fans have long been critical of students at Michigan and Western Michigan for their profanities and nastiness.
Now, it's time for the BG students to clean up their act.

We've talked about this numerous times over the years, but
HE'S RIGHT!
Students: You go to BGSU, not Toledo! (Sam Wyche rant is over)

anything that once again demonstrates how much more class we have than the michiganders, works for me. (not difficult, that.)

sure, he's right.
he's also spot-on with comments on the (meh) ice-box seating. cheezy is the word.

Not quite spot-on:
The premium seating area could eas[ily] be put on top of the Newlove Skate Shop at the south end.
The arena is already horrible in terms of handicapped accessibility. This would just make it even worse. How does he suppose someone in a wheelchair would get up there?

How would everybody else get up there? Currently, the only access to the area up there is by ladder. Obviously, putting the high roller's club up there is going to take some design and renovation work. Fairly simple to use an elevator instead of stairs.

Simple maybe, inexpensive? No.

In the grand scheme of things, what that area needs to be to generate the kind of revenue it should, an elevator will be fairly inexpensive.

it appears we have gotten off point. Profanity shows a lack of class and intelligence. Our students must be more creative and not resort to western michigan thinking. We are better than that.

Getting the "Bull S***" chant out of the rink is going to be near impossible because college kids love to chant and swear. I cringe every time I hear it because I know that goes out on our radio and internet broadcasts. Any sound in that arena goes straight to the roof and four feet above our heads in the press box.
Maybe it's something the Bleacher Creatures can try to stop.

Regarding the ice box seats, I think maybe they should cut down on the number, at least. The tables are never all filled. Maybe in the future if you sell those seats then bring the other tables out.

The only chant that I heard that I would gladly see disappear would be the "A%^hole" chant or "bulls&(t" chant. Those are stupid and pointless. However, the chant to send the guy to the box...love it. Good luck trying to get rid of that one.

If you allow people to stand next to the new premium seats it devalues those seats. Why should somebody pay more for those seats if somebody else can pay general admission and stand 10 feet from you?

You're not paying for "premium location" seats. You're paying for a barstool, table, and waitress. If they were "premium location" seats, with those same amenities, they would be located up high near center ice. And they would be sold out.

Easy solution. Keep the profanities but yell them in French or another foreign language. The students can still swear and nobody but a select few will know what the heck they're talking about. Bemusement > Offense

The one that made me nuts happened mid game Friday night. A Colgate player delivered a crushing, but perfectly legal body check near center ice...they all started the "a$$ hole" chant. C'mon, kids...learn SOMETHING about the game.

I see two solution for the profanity. First, toss the whole student section. I would imagine it would only happen a couple of times before the the point gets across. Second, have a "cheer practice" and address the issue. If it does not resolve itself then see number 1.
