I’ve only been watching home games for a semester, but I’ve been watching the team for a few years. I grew up in Big Rapids, Michigan (sound familiar?). The first time I ever heard of BGSU was in Ferris State’s barn-- I mean, hockey rink.

They hung banners of all the CCHA schools along the long side of the rink. There was that one with the funny name and the funny colors (I thought the seal brown was a dark green!); I never thought I’d end up going to school there. There’s a picture of me from when I was in first grade skating on the rink with BG’s banner in the background, almost foreshadowing. It’s pretty cool. I visited BG’s campus in December of my junior year, 2011, and was then got to watch BG visit Ferris next February. If I remember correctly, BG was swept. Later that season, though, BG came back to Ferris for the playoffs, which set up my favorite Bowling Green hockey memory, last-place BG knocking off top-ranked and eventual National runners-up Ferris State on the road, setting up a trip to the Joe. I got to watch that game against Michigan on TV, where BG lost in OT, but that run got me excited in BG, where I committed a year later.
I guess what I like best about Falcon hockey is the student section, led by the Bleacher Creatures. Our student section is a lot better than I ever remember Ferris’s being. We’re loud and enthusiastic the whole game. I love singing Ay Ziggy on goals and yelling “And Toledo Still Sucks!” on the one minute remaining call. It’s the only sport where everyone in the student section sings! It’s a fun place to watch hockey, not to mention rough on visitors. The program and the university in general are full of tradition. I’ve heard lots of stories about the rink packed and overflowing into the aisles. The Bleacher Creatures were even mentioned in a Sports Illustrated article from a few decades ago. I hope they can get the rink back to the level of intensity the “Madhouse on Mercer” used to have.
I’m looking forward to a great second half of the season. Roll Along!
