why we love Falcon hockey

Post by poltergeist »

subtitled, 'what trolls will never understand'. ;-)
I'll get the ball rolling, but please chime in.

Of course the national championship was glorious, but there is so much more to the Falcon hockey heritage. The cradle of coaches (Mason, York, Bylsma, to name a few...). The Olympians. The Hobey Baker winners.
And my own personal fave: Jordan Sigalet's 2004/2005 season. The team only finished at .500, and he "only" ended up 2nd-team All-CCHA--but for me his effort that year defines the best of college athletics. My kid was 13 at the time, and hugely influenced. He's still got Sigalet's autograph somewhere.

GREAT THREAD IDEA!!! :supz:
Wow, I don't even know where to begin! We've been watching this team since they swept Zero State in December of 1983 and it's been a helluva roller coaster ride, that's for sure. And without a doubt, Jordan Sigalet's story is and always will be at the top of my favorites that make this program so special! So, let me think; here is what just pops in my head when I start thinking of the Falcon Hockey memories: The many holiday tournaments that we went to; The trips to the Joe where we'd get beat regularly by MSU, often in OT; Getting yelled at by the old, ugly MSU lady in her equally old and ugly hat when we FINALLY beat those egg suckers at the Joe in the semi finals in 1988; Helping the hockey program out with various events; The summer alumni golf outing and the fun we have up at the Brathaus, but I think what I really remember and love is how the Falcon Hockey FAMILY (fans AND alumni) stood up and yelled LOUDLY that they would NOT allow this program to be destroyed!! I will forever be grateful to the fans, alumni and DR. CAROL CARTWRIGHT for stepping up and saving this program and more importantly, making it better than it has been in a very, very long time!!

I'm sure I'll come up with a lot more great reasons why I love Falcon Hockey, but those popped up right away as I read the first post on this thread. I hope a LOT of fans chime in here!!

GO FALCONS!!

"Regarding BGSU, I would think their biggest strength is that they never give up, They never slow down and they battle hard even after the other team scores. We have to be on our game and never, ever take the foot off the gas for a second."

"BG was relentless. It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."

I’ve only been watching home games for a semester, but I’ve been watching the team for a few years. I grew up in Big Rapids, Michigan (sound familiar?). The first time I ever heard of BGSU was in Ferris State’s barn-- I mean, hockey rink.:D They hung banners of all the CCHA schools along the long side of the rink. There was that one with the funny name and the funny colors (I thought the seal brown was a dark green!); I never thought I’d end up going to school there. There’s a picture of me from when I was in first grade skating on the rink with BG’s banner in the background, almost foreshadowing. It’s pretty cool. I visited BG’s campus in December of my junior year, 2011, and was then got to watch BG visit Ferris next February. If I remember correctly, BG was swept. Later that season, though, BG came back to Ferris for the playoffs, which set up my favorite Bowling Green hockey memory, last-place BG knocking off top-ranked and eventual National runners-up Ferris State on the road, setting up a trip to the Joe. I got to watch that game against Michigan on TV, where BG lost in OT, but that run got me excited in BG, where I committed a year later.

I guess what I like best about Falcon hockey is the student section, led by the Bleacher Creatures. Our student section is a lot better than I ever remember Ferris’s being. We’re loud and enthusiastic the whole game. I love singing Ay Ziggy on goals and yelling “And Toledo Still Sucks!” on the one minute remaining call. It’s the only sport where everyone in the student section sings! It’s a fun place to watch hockey, not to mention rough on visitors. The program and the university in general are full of tradition. I’ve heard lots of stories about the rink packed and overflowing into the aisles. The Bleacher Creatures were even mentioned in a Sports Illustrated article from a few decades ago. I hope they can get the rink back to the level of intensity the “Madhouse on Mercer” used to have.

I’m looking forward to a great second half of the season. Roll Along!

A couple quick moments:

Athletic Band during hockey was where I first began talking with my now-wife. I was explaining the game to her during her freshman year (my sophomore year).

I believe it was that same year - 2008, when we drew home ice for the first round of the playoffs versus LSSU and it was the weekend of spring break. Arena was fairly dead because of the lack of students. We lost game 1, came back in a thriller to win game 2, forcing game 3 on a Sunday evening. There was a triple header one of those days (both basketball programs and hockey). Our faces were shot from all the playing. We were down 3-2 with under 2 to play, I think. We scored to tie it up and send it to OT. The arena was pure electric after that. Then in OT, Jacob Cepis skated over blue line and fired a shot so hard I couldn't even see the puck. All I saw was the red light go on. I don't think I had ever screamed so loud. That was a great start to break.
