Wow!!! What a high school Championship game between Cleveland St. Ignatius vs Sylvania Northview.

Game called at 1-1 after SEVEN overtimes. Over 100 minutes on ice. Nearly a five hour game.

The Northview goalie saved 76 of 77 shots. The team blocked another 43 shots.

The game got national attention in USA Today, CNN and Fox Sports as well as ESPN and Canada's Hockey Night. What an EPIC game.

Just in case anybody doesn't know, Northview's head coach is a Falcon. Michael Jones, class of 2000.

Going into the game one would have thought a 'Wildcat' would have won the game to be state champion. Whom would have thought both Wildcats would be champions.

Too bad they didn't have a winger named Cavallini. :)

Nice going OHSAA. Making national an international headlines for all the WRONG reasons.

Really? It was the wrong decision? If some of the kids were beginning to show signs of extreme fatigue, I think it was a wise decision. A tie game is nothing...some kid going to the hospital and almost dying from rhabdo...that would have generated headlines for the wrong reasons.

How much attention would they get for this headline...
"Dehydrated 16yr old Collapses On Ice, Dies On Route To Hospital"

Wow...Flipper now a bleeding heart...who would have thunk it...lol

One question though. What if this had been the semi-final game?

Yeah...not so much a "bleeding heart" just experienced and knowledgeable about the dangers of letting even highly conditioned and motivated athletes push it too far...I guess I'm not so invested in the macho headgames tied to "having a winner" at the HS level that I'd be willing to risk some kid damaging himself for life. :)

And yes..there's a risk of injury in almost any sport, but playing a regulation game of a demandiong sport followed by 56 minutes of extra action loads up the risk to an unacceptable level once symptons of exhaustion start to show.

they probably would have kept playing, since [thankfully] they couldn't go to a shootout, and they wouldn't have been able to continue the next day.
that doesn't mean it wouldn't have been risky, or that they didn't make the right decision for this game.

the teams are ok with it, and that's what counts. the only people complaining are fans, and fans don't have to be responsible for player health.

As David Marsh said, "You wake up the next day. Me and my team did some big things. I was upset they stopped the game. I wanted to keep playing. That changed today. I realized I’m a state champion.”
yep, he's a champ.

"The move is not unprecedented. A 2008 Michigan hockey final was declared a tie after eight overtimes, and last month a girls’ hockey final in New York was halted after four overtimes between Skaneateles and Potsdam Central."

heh. go Potsdam Central Sandstoners! (my high school, lol.)

I'm not trying to play macho hard ass here...lol. And I didn't see any of the game. Had there been an issue with any of the players in the earlier overtimes? Anybody injured, etc. If so, then I'd be more inclined to agree.

We all know where this is headed though...I can almost guarantee you they'll be shootouts next year in the OHSAA...which would suck.

They could have also finished at a later date, like the next day!
