Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University Athletics Department has announced that the hockey program will take part in the 2017 Great Lakes Invitational at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit.

Bowling Green will join Michigan, Michigan State and Michigan Tech for the annual event, which began in 1965. The Falcons also competed in the event in both 1976 and 1984. BGSU will be the first team from outside the state of Michigan to compete in the Great Lakes Invitational since Boston College in 2011. While a final schedule is yet to be determined, BGSU will compete on two consecutive days between Dec. 27 and Dec. 30, 2017.

Michigan, Michigan State and Michigan Tech have all competed in every Great Lakes Invitational since 1979, while inviting a fourth team. Michigan leads with 15 GLI championships, followed by Michigan State with 12 and Michigan Tech with 10. Western Michigan and North Dakota have each won the championship twice, with the Broncos earning the title in 2013. No team from outside the state of Michigan has won the championship since Colorado College in 2005.

Actually...by 2017 I would think that tournament would be in the new arena. That complex is set to be completed by the 2016/2017 season IIRC
