Very Cool !
I'd actually consider driving up if the Falcons were on the road.
Still the biggest upset in sports given the circumstances at the time, it was more then a hockey to the people watching.

The most poignant story related to the reunion is the story about the struggles of former Falcon Mark Wells, who has lost basically everything to an illness, and even had to sell his gold medal to pay for medications.
I had not heard anything about this until I saw the CBS story, but maybe I just am too far removed from BG and it was in the local media.
Whatever the case, I do think it would be very appropriate for BGSU to get behind some type of fundraising effort to help Wells, who has another surgery coming up in early March. This is a guy who represented the university and the country with dignity, and despite not being a big "name" in US hockey at the time, played a crucial role in the US winning the gold.
One stat they related in the story was that no opposing team scored a goal against the US when Wells was on the ice. That is a pretty compelling statistic.
I would be more than willing to give to a charitable effort on behalf of Wells, if someone would get behind it with a credible name (so people are more willing to give).
Here's a story I found that explains what he's been through...

WOW! What a story! Hard to even imagine the thought of staying in a body cast for that length of time.....and selling his Olympic medal for 40K, obviously to help pay monster medical bills... and to think someone later bid 300K for it...is saddening... Hope he enjoys the reunion and I hope ESPN does right by covering it.
BTW, I never realized how much ice time he'd accumulated vs the Russians....guess his time on the ice wasn't as dramatic as some of the players...Morrow, for example, was mentioned numerous times.

Here is the feature that NBC did on Mark for their reunion coverage:

Thanks for posting that story. I too, had no idea what all that man has been through. Maybe someone can start a

I could start such a drive or anyone else -- but it needs some credentials behind it. Which is why I was hoping BGSU might have seen this and gotten involved somehow. It is very appropriate that they do so, and it would be wonderful publicity for the university and the hockey program. Perhaps someone could forward this information and idea to the AD or the coach.
A grass roots type of drive will work, but it is going to need to go "viral" somehow to be successful.

With the University doing its own campaign for funds, I sincerely doubt they will start a campaign to raise money for an alumnus. By doing that, they are essentially asking donors to choose whether to fund the University or the former hockey player. In the end, they won't get enough new donors or donor dollars out of this process to offset the dollars they would lose to the second campaign. Yes, it is a good cause, but the timing is terrible.
