I don't know what it is, but I haven't been able to stop thinking about this all day. I'll admit I was never really a fan of his, but hate to see this happen to anybody. I practically grew up on the ice. Many of you witnessed that. Never once wore a helmet. Can only remember falling once before a game, but can't count the number of times while on skates at public skates and such.

Hug your loved ones. We kind of accept that this stuff happens in my line of work. In hockey? Rarely does it even cross the mind as a possibility.

Thought the same thing. I never played organized hockey, but I definitely played pick-up games, games on ponds, public skating. Fell once playing in tennis shoes and cracked my head good. Just sickening that this happened and is a total fluke.

As I said in another thread when the accident happened, a lot of us apparently just knew him as "the fat ref," but it looks like he was liked and respected among players and coaches and loved being around the sport. Looks like he had young children, too. So sad.

Unfortunately some hard lessons learned here...never skate without a helmet or with your hands in your pockets.

As a health and safety officer, I just cringe reading this story. His death could've easily been avoided.
