Next up for our
5th-ranked Falcons (14-2-0, 3-1-0 WCHA) will be the Bemidji State Beavers (3–4-2, 1-1-0 WCHA) on Thursday, January 21, at 6:07pm and Friday, January 22 at 3:07pm. Be mindful of the weird dates/times of this series so you don’t miss the games, which will be broadcast on
https://www.flohockey.tv/.
Bemidji had an off weekend in between our series, so they’ll be rested and ready to dance with us again. Most of you will recall that we split with them last time out, winning 3-2 on Friday night, and losing 4-3 in OT on Saturday. This Bemidji team has gotten off to a relatively slow start this season, but they have played some quality competition so far, so I wouldn’t assume this to be a easy weekend, especially on the road. It took OT for them to beat us last time, but we’ll need to be on top of our game to beat the team that was picked to finish above us in the standings by both the media and the coaches in the preseason polls.
This is a non conference series - so it won’t count in the standings. But when we’re chasing another NCAA tournament bid, every win we can stack will help our resume.
Goaltender Stats:
BGSU
Sr. Eric Dop... GAA - 2.00, SV% - .931, 8–1-0
So. Zack Rose... GAA - 1.44, SV% - .935, 6-1-0
Bemidji State
Sr. Zach Driscoll… GAA - 2.80, SV% - .913, 3-4-2
Go Falcons - Beat Bemidji!

Going to be another tough series. Might be a good thing BG lost to them a couple weeks ago as there should be some extra motivation to get a sweep.
BG seems a little banged up at the moment too. Gavin Gould was in a sling after the game Saturday and Craggs also left with what looked like a potential knee/lower body injury.

Coach actually addressed both of those after the game in his presser.
Gavin jammed his wrist. Craggs was actually cut with a skate and needed to be stitched up. From my understanding, neither are expected to be long-term issues.

A repeat series that really means nothing in the grand scheme of things this season (first one counted for points). It will be interesting to see how each team responds.

Means more to BG than Bemidji given BG is in the driver's seat for an at-large bid if they don't win the league tournament.

If there are at-large bids available. There hasn't really been an announcement of what the tournament will look like this year. And it's the WCHA. With the pairwise non-existent this season, anything can happen. Unfortunately, I can see a WCHA or Atlantic team with an .800 winning percentage being passed over for a .600 winning percentage B10 or Nacho. There's also 10ish teams not playing. Wouldn't be a stretch to see the tournament knocked back to 12 teams this year. Closest to a guarantee is the auto bid.

That's for sure. Michigan has been a top 10 team all season and they look average at best. They're 8-6 and the best team they've beaten is Wisconsin. I don't get pollsters obsession with them this year. Duluth in the top 10 with a 6-5-2 record probably isn't deserved either.

It’s almost impossible to tell who is good by just looking at records. BG is a good team this year and they have confidence. If they keep winning they’ll be in. From the games I’ve seen the WCHA is basically on par with Atlantic hockey outside of BG and Mankato. If BG was playing in Big 10 or NCHC they’d be middle of the pack in my opinion.
It’s all conjecture....all BG needs to do at this point is not crap the bed. Not sure how that would even happen with lack of talent in the league. Barring some major injuries or out of the blue suspensions, BG will have enough wins to be in.

That's a good point. Fairest solution would be to take the two best schools from each of the six conferences for a 12-team field.

Really, we don't even know what the format of the WCHA tournament is yet this year, let alone the national tournament. We really only know that it's over 2 weekends instead of 3, and that there are only 8 teams fighting to make the postseason instead of 10 for 8 spots.
I could see a couple of scenarios here:
#1 - Just the top 4 teams make it, and we start with a semifinal series and then a championship game the following weekend. Those could either be at campus sites, or we could see everything take place in the same, neutral location (perhaps even hosted by the highest seed, on campus?) over 2 weekends.
#2 - All 8 teams competing this year make it. We start with a quarterfinal series (likely at campus sites), then the semifinal and final are played in a neutral location, back to back days, kind of akin back to what things were before the campus tournaments with the "Final Five."
#3 - We don't crown a tournament champion, and the regular season champ gets the automatic bid. This feels like a possibility due to all of the games that have been postponed and still need to be made up.
As far as potential neutral sites go: I know Detroit is already busy at home on championship weekend, but the Minnesota Wild are on the road that weekend, so the XCel Center would theoretically be available based on my very limited research.
Anyone have other ideas?

If there's a tournament I can see it being at a neutral site and single-elimination. Kind of along the lines of what the NCHC did at UNO earlier in the season. Traditional format is probably not going to be an option. Even taking the regular season champion may not be fair since not all teams will be able to play the same number of games, pending future postponements.

If there's still no fans, there's no reason for a neutral site. Only problems would be ice availability in an arena that could support the number of teams. Would also need to look at lodging availability, but that would probably only come into play with all 8 teams at one site.

Bemidji gets on the board first. We look like we're sleepwalking in the first 6 and a half minutes.
