Last night says a lot about this team

Post by Bleeding Orange »

I would have preferred that we had gotten two points last night, but I don't think I have ever been happier with a one point performance before.

We went down early 3-0 in the first period, and I must admit that I was thinking to myself that we probably weren't going to pull this one out. But, we came back in the second period with two quick scores less than 20 seconds apart to bring the score to 3-2. I started thinking 'well, maybe we've got a shot at this one...'

Shortly after we closed the gap, though, Minabariet put one in our own net while trying to help Jordan make a save. We were down 4-2, and that is the kind of play that can break a team's back. The score Ferris got towards the end of the 2nd period didn't help. Going into the third, we were in the same position we were going into the second: down 3, 5-2.

Early on in the third with Sigalet out and Horrell in, we got two quick goals 45 seconds apart from one another. We kept pressure on the Ferris defense all throughout the first half of the third -- so much so that Horrell only saw one shot in his first ten minutes of action. That pressure paid off when we got the equalizer with a little more than 7 minutes left in the game. Ferris got some good chances in the remainder of the third, but Horrell was up to the challenge and stood on his head a couple of times (including a huge breakaway glove save). We held out in OT to get a point in a game that it looked like we were dead in several times.

This was HUGE. To come back twice on someone else's ice is a statement --we don't give up. I have never been prouder of this team than I was last night. Pooch did a great job of keeping the teams head in the game, and I also think he did a good job putting Horrell in to hold the lead in the third period. Sometimes you just have to get a fresh head in goal, even if your starter is awaiting the Hobey.

We've got a tough road to hoe before the playoffs. We are atop a log-jam for the last two home-ice spots with Miami (who has a very favorable schedule and is starting to get healthy) only two points behind. Admittedly, I was a bit worried in the first and second period last night about our chance at getting a home-ice spot. We have to beat the teams like Ferris if we're going to have a shot at the teams atop the conference.

And, although we didn't beat Ferris, we showed determination that only championship teams possess. I am so excited to see what this team does the rest of the way. :D

I agree with your sentiments, but must point out that it wasn't Minnabarriet who scored for Ferris.

My bad. Who was it then? I could've sworn it was Minnabarriet.

It was Don Morrison. I appologize. Whoever it was, it was an accident that we were able to overcome.

Very similar situation when we played Wayne State two years ago at the Joe on a Tuesday night. Morrison (I think, it was him) put the puck in our own net. I thought we were done, but the team rallied back and won that game with just a few seconds left on the clock. It was then that I knew that this team had turned the corner, that they weren't going to roll over and die, that they would fight to end no matter what!! That is what happened last night at Ferris too! Wonderful to see a team that doesn't give up no matter what is happening. Effort is what makes this team so fun to watch!! Tonight's win was fantastic as well!!

On to the schmuckeyes.....

"BG was relentless. It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."

It was quite a rally we had that night, though, it was our own fault for getting in such a hole. Not sure what was up, but our D looked like a HS team until the 3rd. Fortunatly we pulled out the tie.

3 points this weekend, I will take that. Even if we come away short at OSU and lost both games and dont pick up a single point, we will stay in 5th place!!!!! Oh how that tie on Fri night looks so good right now.

Actually I was thinking in the CCHA playoffs...I think we were playing michigan state? I remember the play like it was yesterday, but can't remember the player. He was trying to clear the puck to the corner from in front of his own net, and he put it top shelf...

We may have done that at another game, but I know it happened against Wayne State at the Joe. And I am pretty sure it was Morrison. I was at that Wayne State game at the Joe on a Tuesday night. I rode the Falcon Club bus to the game. Fantasitc come from behind win in the last minute of the game, if I recall correctly. When that goal happened, we were just stunned. Then whenever we had the puck near our net, the Wayne State fans would yell, "SHOOT!!" It was actually pretty funny, especially when we battled back and won the game.

GO FALCONS!!
SWEEP THE BUCKS!!
