Siggy is pulling away from the Hobey Pack

After my morning (and daily) vote, Jordan had a 2,899 lead and is solidly in first place.

I sent an email to Tom Archdeacon of the Dayton Daily News last Friday concerning Jordan (and Jonathan). He does a lot of human interest columns in in the Sports Section. He has covered Miami U., MAC and the CCHA fairly well in the past. Hopefully, he will think Siggy's run for the Hobey is worthwhile for a column.

If he is looking for a solid human interest story, a kid battling MS while excelling as a scholar-athlete is certainly a frontrunner...

This is true, but probably not why Siggy wants to win. We should remember how good of a goalie on the ice he is.

I tried to focus on Jordan's accomplishments on the ice. I tired to be brief, but detailed enough to get Archdeacon's attention. Please forgive me if I missed any important stats that I should have added. Here is the bulk of my email -

Mr. Archdeacon:

I have enjoyed your column over the years. Thank you.

Being an alumni of both BGSU (1983) and Miami University (1986), I always enjoy anything you have to write about the MAC or the CCHA.

I writing you concerning Hobey Baker Award candidate Jordan Siglalet, the goalie for my beloved BGSU Falcons. Jordan was been near the top in save percentage in the nation for the last two years (This year = 0.925 as of 1/30/05 - which is 6th in the nation). He presently is a senior and has missed a few games this year. On December 13, Jordan held a press conference at the BG Ice Arena announcing that he has been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. You can find more information at www.bgsufalcons.com. He is still playing great hockey and many BG fans, such as myself, are pushing him for the Hobey Baker. His future in Hockey (drafted in the 7th round 2001 by the Boston Bruin) may be limited by MS.

As you know the Hobey Baker is awarded to the college hockey player who meets the following criteria:
1. Candidates must exhibit strength of character both on and off the ice.
2. Candidates must contribute to the integrity of the team and display outstanding skills in all phases of the game.
3. Consideration should be given to scholastic achievement and sportmanship.
4. Candidates must comply with all NCAA rules: be full time students in an accredited NCAA or NAIA college or university; and complete 50% or more of the season.

Being a leader in stats and his game is one thing, being able to "exhibit a strength of character both on and off the ice" is more difficult. Many of us BG fans feel that describes Jordan Sigalet. He was named to the 2003-04 CCHA First Team and 2003-04 CCHA All-Academic Honorable Mention. He holds the single season saves record at BG with 1,140 in 2003-04. He lead the nation last year in minutes played (2210:02), saves (1,140), and shots faced (1,241).

I thought you might be interested in Jordan's story for a future article. What is also interesting is his little brother Jonathan is a Sophomore defense man for BG and also a Hobey Baker candidate.

Thank you for your time.

I think most of us here are of the opinion that our vote will have very little weight in the end analysis, so we need to get the word out by other means as to help affect the voting.

IMHO - the more postive press that Jordan gets about his level of play the better.

You are absolutely right about this!! When Brian Holzinger was up for the Hobey, the marketing department put on a media blitz. They sent out flyers with pictures and biographical, as well as career information. I believe it was sent to all voting members as well as a ton of media outlets. The same thing MUST be done for Jordan as well.

GO FALCONS!!
SWEEP THE SCHMUCKEYES!!!

When voting, don't forget about Little Siggy! He's in 11th place. So those of you who have the multiple e-mail addresses, maybe give Little Siggy a little 1st place votes love?

Ask yourself who Little Siggy would vote for... and proceed accordingly.
