Please excuse my ignorance, but will someone please explain to me just exactly how the CCHA tourney works? All I know is the games are March 11-13!? But does BG play? When? Where? Is this where "Home Ice" comes into effect? Sorry - I just want to be educated and not like "um, yeah" when people ask me

OK:

First round is three games (win two, you advance). All CCHA teams are in the first round; top six teams host the bottom six (#1 plays #12, etc.). Game 1 is Friday 3/11, #2 Saturday, #3 Sunday, if necessary.

Winning six teams advance to "Super Six", held at Joe Louis Arena. Two Quarterfinal games will be played Thursday, 3/17 - top 2 teams going in to the Joe have a bye.
Semifinal games are Friday
Third place and championship games are Saturday, 3/19

There's never a stupid question. Yes, the CCHA first round is the 11th through the 13th. It's a best of 3 games, and yes, if necessary, all 3 games will be in BG. We don't know who we will play yet, but we will know soon. If BG can get at least a point this weekend from Michigan, we will finish in 4th place in the CCHA. When I was at BG ('82-'86) it used to be a total goals series. In theory, you could have won 2 of the 3 games and still lost the series. They don't do that anymore. I hope this helps.

So what you're both saying is that we don't know yet whether BG will be in the tourney? And whether or not it will be on Home Ice?

Won't know who we play until this Saturday night
If we win 2 games on home ice, we go to Joe Louis

BG is hosting a first round series. Everybody plays in the first round. The winning six teams advance to the "Super Six" at Joe Louis Arena. After the first round, there are no more games at campus sites. At the "Super Six," the remaining teams are seeded based on their regular season finish (If there are any upsets in the first round, here is where they come into play). The top two remaining teams have byes for the second round of the tourney (Thursday games at JLA). The remaining four teams play (highest seed vs. lowest) Thursday quarterfinal games. The winners of those games face the teams that received byes in Friday's semifinal games (again, lowest seed vs highest). The winners of the semifinal games face off for the championship while the losers face off for third place.

Based on current standings, here's an example from first round through championship:

First round (Campus sites, best 2 of 3):
#12 ND beats #1 UM
#11 WMU beats #2 OSU
#10 FSU loses to #3 NMU
#9 LSSU beats #4 UNO
#8 MSU loses to #5 BGSU
#7 Miami loses to #6 UAF

This would leave the second round rankings as:

#1 NMU
#2 BGSU
#3 UAF
#4 LSSU
#5 WMU
#6 ND

So, NMU and BGSU would get byes for the quarterfinals. The games for the quaterfinals would be as follows (At Joe Louis Arena):

#3 UAF beats #6 ND
#4 LSSU beats #5 WMU

Semifinals (At Joe Louis Arena):

#1 NMU loses to #4 LSSU
#2 BGSU beats #3 UAF

Third place game (At Joe Louis Arena):

#3 UAF beats #4 LSSU

Championship (At Joe Louis Arena):

#1 NMU loses to #2 BGSU

Not that it matters, or to add to any confusion, but the total goals series was just two games. As we discussed a couple days ago, in '84, we lost to Boston U. in a total goals series game in the first round of the NCAA's by 3 goals, came back to beat them by three the next night, so they played over time (since the "series" was tied 8 goals apiece or so). We got the goal in OT and advanced.... the rest, I hear, is history.

Nice example...but probably the most unrealistic thing I think anyone has ever seen. Michigan State will be the only road team to win, if they even are a road team. ND has absolutely zero chance to beat Michigan twice out of three. Nobody else is untouchable in the first round, but you make it seem like that's likely.

I think there are a couple teams able to pull upsets, but you're right, that is a completely ridiculous scenario. It's just what I'd like to see happen
