Hi all. I know this really is kinda out of the blue. I didn't get a chance to fill out the Arena survey they gave out at, I think the Michigan State game or the Michigan game. Did it have anything about the lights in the Ice Arena? Frankly, they're horrible. I can't believe that the guys can see when they're out there. I was just wondering if there might be a chance of replacing the lighting. I love the Ice Arena, don't get me wrong, but the lights have to be changed. Just my two cents!

This has always been a major complaint of opponents as well. I don't think there is another alternative because the ceiling is so low. If they put any other type of lighting in there the pucks would hit them even more.

I remember that always got a huge ovation out of the crowd whenever a puck hit one of the flouresecent lights and it would come crashing down to the ice and shatter.

Correct. The lighting systems that arenas are using these days would require the ceiling of the Ice Arena to be lifted. Seeing how there are solar panels installed on the roof of the Arena, I don't see this happening anywhere in the near future.

I don't think I've ever seen that, but if I did it would likely thrill and scare me at the same time. Have players gotten hurt?

Not to my knowledge. They usually have time to skate clear of the falling bulb.

What usually happens is that the game gets delayed about 10 mins while the ice crew comes on with brooms to sweep up all the glass and debris. The blub always shatters when it hits the ice.

Sometimes only part of the bulb comes down, like if they hit it directly, but once the puck hit the end and the entire bulb came down intact (until it hit the ice anyway).

BG's Ice Arena is kinda like that ugly cousin, no one really likes to look at her, but she's still family. It's kind of sad, because it wouldn't take much to spruce the place up (orange walls!) and put in some decent chair-back seats.

Actually, lighting was on the questionaire. They do have the ability to raise the ceiling if necessary. From what I understand there is a 6 - 8 foot clearance between the ceiling and the roof. The ceiling could be raised several feet to allow for clearance for the new lighting. Something else to take into consideration is the fact that, due to the brightness of the new lighting, fewer lights would be needed and they would be spaced further apart, meaning fewer pucks hitting the lights.

I'd love to see that..as long as nobody got hurt. But then again it's hockey, you will get hurt.
