Hockey Schedule Cards Rant

Post by Falcon Fanatic »

At Fricker's tonight, someone from the marketing department was handing out little schedule cards for men's and women's basketball. The men do not start play until November 10th and the women do not start until November 18th. We asked, "WHERE ARE THE HOCKEY SCHEDULE CARDS??????????" She said, "They will be here next Monday." We replied, "WELL, WE WON'T, WE WILL BE AT THE FIRST GAME!!!!"

GRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :axe:  :duh:

[/end rant]
"Regarding BGSU, I would think their biggest strength is that they never give up, They never slow down and they battle hard even after the other team scores. We have to be on our game and never, ever take the foot off the gas for a second."

"BG was relentless. It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."

As far as the marketing department goes, Hockey still falls behind Football and Basketball.

That's why I was growling so LOUDLY!! It drives me crazy. The hockey progam is the ONLY program at BG that can contend for a true national title. THIS TEAM WILL BE DOING THAT VERY SOON!!! The marketing department needs to get a clue about that.

....sorry....ranting again..... :?

Now this may make your blood boil a little , but its true, the marketing dept. will get those cards out sooner when Hockey starts doing what football and the ladies basketball is doing haveing success. When the hockey team starts having success I'm betting they have to get those things out sooner cuz the demand will be so that they'll have too. Right now they probably see no reason to pump the hockey team at this point. But once hockey gets really good I'm sure the markting dept. will be all over it. Remember guys our last and only national championship came 20 years ago.
Don't get me wrong , I'm actually expecting a little bit more this year from bg hockey, but nonetheless flame away as you will. :-\

And what YOU don't understand is that hockey is the ONLY sport that has brought a national championship to Bowling Green.
Not football, not hoop (men's or women's) but hockey.

Who on the football team has ever won the Heisman? Nobody.
Yet the hockey team has had two Hobey Baker winners, and several finalists, including Jordan Sigalet last season!

Who has the football or basketball team ever produced that went on to have sucessful professional careers? And by successful, I don't mean a thrid string defensive end or the 10th guy on the bench.
Our hockey team can boast one of only two players ever to win an Olympic Gold Medal and a Stanley Cup Championship in the same year (Ken Morrow - 1980, and yes, that's the team that was portrayed in Miracle), a Norris Trophy winner (Rob Blake) and a bunch of dudes who had long NHL careers long = 10 years or more).

Believe me when I tell you that the only people outside of the Midwest who have heard of Bowling Green have heard of it because of its hockey program, NOT because of football or basketball.

The new marketing guy bites it... this isn't the first thing he's screwed up and it won't be the last.

It's frustrating because hockey is starting to outdraw basketball again, and yet the program is still treated like the ugly step child.

Average home attendance last year for hockey was 2671...for mens basketball it was 2451. As the team continues to improve the disparity will increase. At its peak BG Hockey was second only to football as a sports money maker.

Too many people still think that there's no way to resurrect hockey in BG due to the facilities. Paluch doesn't believe that, and because of his passion the program has been slowly turning the corner and is now picking up steam. Most people don't realize this but next year's class is already taking shape and looks to be on track to be one of the best yet under Paluch's tenure. It will be Paluch's fourth recruiting class and will mark the beginning of BG's second reign in the elite of the CCHA. (I fully expect to be near the top this year but next year will show that we're there to stay!)

The legacy of BG Hockey is still alive and kicking in spite of what anyone thinks.

On top of what McConvey (about whom I still always wonder if its D'Arcy or not) stated hockey has a heckuva lot larger following that women's hoops will EVER have.

Marketing must bend over backwards for football, its a cash cow, and even if we aren't winning titles is still larger than college hockey could ever be.

But I would bet that our hockey team had larger attendance figures than the men's hoops team last year, and its infinitely better than women's hoops, regardless of their success. As for having success, I believe I attended a HOME CCHA playoff game last year, and we had a goalie in the finalists for the Hobey Baker. That sounds like some success to me.

I feel bad, because I don't attend nearly the hockey games that I used to when I was in school, but I still hate to see our hockey program get $h!t on by the marketing department, or even worse, BG fans. Don't even begin to think that women's basketball is bigger than hockey. It's not, it never has been, and it never will be.

First, I want to state that I am absolutely, unequivocally, positively NOT D'Arcy McConvey. He was my favorite player in my years at BG so I stole his name for this board, but I'm not him. My opinions are mine, not his :)

And I wanted to say that in no way was I saying that football is not a big sport, nor that marketing isn't going to give them the most play. (And they should). Our football program has obviously made big strides in the last few years, what with the national rankings and the bowl games and all.
My rant was mostly directed at falconboy's moronic ideas that BGSU's hockey team doesn't count for anything because its last national championship was 20 years ago.

No...it's more about the fact that basketball doesn't start until Nov. 10 and they're at Fricker's handing out schedule cards for them already. Hockey kicks off next week and the cards won't be here until then.

How can they be so far ahead of schedule for basketball and so far behind for hockey? Hockey schedules and posters should have been up and out at least two weeks ago. Or, if you go by basketball, a month and a half ago.

I'm with ya guys. As BGFan found the numbers for, our hockey program is bringing in more folks than the basketball program, again. So why are they taking a back seat? Yeah it sounds petty, its just schedule cards, but then you realize that those cards & posters are how a LARGE percentage of your potential audience knows when/where games are being played.

Until I read this post, I really didn't know that the season started already next week. Had I seen one of the schedule cards around town I would've grabbed one and known.

I have an idea, send an e-mail to the people in the athletic department expressing your dissapointment like I just did. That will kick them in the backside enough to at least let them know how much they screwed up.

Trust me, the people handing out the cards at Fricker's heard the rant. About half of the people in there are rabid hockey fans. Every one of us let them know how we felt.

That doesn't mean that they won't also get an email or two, but they got quite the ear full last night.

But were those people handing out the cards the interns who have no say in matters or was it the top man?? Send the e-mails to the person who makes the decisions, or to Scott and tell him you support him. Then he can go to marketing.
