FIRST GAME.....FINALLY!!!

Post by Falcon Fanatic »

Falcons host Windsor Monday night to open the season:

http://bgsufalcons.collegesports.com/sp ... 05aab.html

The first full practice will be tomorrow morning. The team will be at the football game handing out schedule cards, I believe!! (YAY, they got them printed!!)

GO HOCKEY!!
TIME TO ROCK THE RINK BABY!!!!

"Regarding BGSU, I would think their biggest strength is that they never give up, They never slow down and they battle hard even after the other team scores. We have to be on our game and never, ever take the foot off the gas for a second."

"BG was relentless. It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."

They have done things like that since Paluch took over. He has had them going to the game as a group, handing out stuff, meet & greet opportunities. They have also gone to other sporting events as a group, which I think is awesome. Time together off the ice builds the cohesiveness that is necessary for team success on the ice!!

GO HOCKEY!!!

I want details afterwards! I am especially interested to hear how our goalie situation looks... 8)

I left after the 2nd. I was hungry and needed to study. A few things I noticed:

1) New Jerseys. The new (non-retail) logo is now on the white jerseys. The interlocking BG is on each shoulder with the new font writing.

2) The goalie situation: Windsor is a very weak team, so it's hard to judge how good our D and goalies are. I will say, we are doing a MUCH better job on the forecheck then I've seen in the past 2 years. For what it's worth, the depth chart is:
Horrell
Spratt
Frazee

3) We're going to be scary good offensively. Again, it's hard to determine D on such a week time, but it seems like the players are seeing plays a lot better than before.

4) Windsor was beaten in every facet, and started to play goon style when they got their butts kicked. The penalty sheet will show that, as I've never seen so many penalties in one game.

5) Speed and power is a great combination, we got it.

I have to say, we're going to be DAMN good if we can just get the right lines and if Horrell is able to step up.

To go along with the stuff on the new jerseys:

the new BOWLING GREEN font is on the back below the number and the numbers and last name font are in the BOWLING GREEN font-style.

We had too many turnovers on our own blue line, some when we were on the power play.

Liked what I saw out of Horrell and even Spratt.

The white jerseys looked sharp. I really LOVE having just a BIG Falcon head on the front. Only complaint I heard was that Matsumoto's number 11 kind of looked like 77 when you first looked at it, due to the font they use now. Minor complaint only.

My impressions: LOTS OF ENERGY on the ice coming from our team!! The guys on the bench STOOD the whole game as if they were watching a close overtime game!! Don Morrison is the Captain this year. There will be no assistants, only Don. Several players told me that he will do a fantastic job! A few players also said they feel that we have a great team that will do VERY well this year. Team chemistry is already VERY good. The guys were VERY excited when talking about the upcoming season. Good to hear such positive energy coming from them!!

Crowd was VERY small, especially at the start, filled in a little, but still hardly anyone there. Given that it was a Monday night, and an exhibition game, I guess it's to be expected. I was disappointed in it though.

All three goalies played well, though Horrell and Spratt wasn't nearly as busy as Frazee was in the third period.. Horrell had a breakaway stop and a few really good saves.

Weird game in that there were a TON of 5:3's and NO one scored while it was 5 on 3, only 5 on 4, if I recall correctly. Haven't had a chance to look at stats or anything, just typing all this from memory.

OK, that's it for tonight, if I think of anything else, I will post it tomorrow.

EDIT: Here's the box stats from USCHO:
http://www.uscho.com/box/?date=20051003 ... u&gender=m

EDIT #2: Football isn't the only BG sport with an announcer that can't pronounce the names. The guy tonight kept calling Svendsen SEVENSON!! Geez.... Besides giving Bales an assist, who wasn't even dressed for the game and the speaker system sounding like an old fashioned radio speaker with no base until they got that fixed during the game....We REALLY need a better speaker system and a guy with a deeper voice that carries better in there!!!

We look good

Post by BGSU Crazy Fan 58 »

Wow, BG looked awesome tonight. Yeah it was Winsdor but I'm still very excited. We have a lot of speed, playmakers, and guys who don't shy away from contact, I like it! Small crowd yes, but there wasn't much notice about the game and it was a monday night. However the students that were there were into the game and we were really getting on Winsdor in the 3rd period(especially #11). Oh it was great to be back watching hockey again! BG games are so much fun, I can't wait till the 14th & 15th. I'm so pumped for that saturday night game against BC, hopefully we sell out the arena and really rock the place. PA guy sucked and music volume changed during the songs, but the goal horn sounded sweet and alot louder than last year(maybe less people to make noise?). Anyways..........Unger and Sitko looked like men possesed, Whitmore had 2 goals I believe and was all over the net, Shmidt- the highly touted defensemen looked very nice. I like how this team looks, I'm excited to start the season. Once again, it was great being in the ice arena watching the Falcons tonight........so much fun!

A few impressions from the box score:

(1) Really nice to see the scoring spread around. Whitmore had 2, Matsumoto, Unger, Unger, Barnett, Pilk and Nesdil each adding one. I hope the scoring gets spread around like that all year - we'd be damn close to unstopable!

(2) 19 SOG with 12 in the third! Holy defense! I realize that we were playing Windsor, but those are still damn, damn good numbers. If we can keep the puck off of our own goaltender it is going to make Spratt's transition to D1 hockey a great deal easier.

(3) Svendsen had TWO assists?!?! Me likey... 8)

Anyhow, I am wickedly jealous of all of you. I miss Falcon football a lot, but there isn't anything like Falcon hockey. The student section, Seeing both FF's after games, the trips to Ann Arbor... I think I may go cry now.

I did just find out, however, that I will be at the Nov. 19 game against Northern Michigan. I'd be there for the Friday game as well but I have to teach on Friday before I fly home.
