Early season game by game observations

Post by BGFan »

Merrimack - This was an anomally. When you outshoot a team 47-23 you usually win. We dominated that game in every way possible except for the final score. If we played them 10 times, we'd beat them 9. Unfortunately it was the 10th one that bit us.

BC - What a barn burner. That game showed that we have the speed to skate with the top teams in the country. I'm not sure if the outcome would have been different if Horrell had started but I have my suspicions. Jimmy just wasn't ready for the spead of the game and seemed to be frozen for some of those plays in front of him. It was a tough game for him to be introduced to NCAA hockey.

OSU - Friday - Out of the frying pan and into the fire for Spratt. OSU was clearly the better team that night. We gave up way too many odd man rushes and hung Jimmy out to dry. I don't think that Horrell would have been able to save that game. Our D was just getting burned too many times along the boards trying to keep the puck in play, but ended up chasing OSU instead.

OSU - Saturday - A completely different defensive mindset that night. We got outshot by almost as much as we outshot Merrimack because we changed our defensive strategy. By not playing our forwards as deep we eliminated the odd man rushes that killed us the night before and limited OSU's scoring chances as well. Add to that a STELLER performance by Horrell and we pull out a tie.

Ferris - Thursday - A GREAT performance by Horrell and we pull out a 0-0 tie at the end of one. Unfortunately that's all she wrote. I fully believe that the ice problems Thursday night quelled our momentum from the OSU tie enough that we lost the Saturday night game.

Ferris - Saturday - We outplayed them for 2 periods. Unfortunately the first period killed us. Why? See the Thursday game above. If we win Thursday night then I believe Saturday would have been a win also.

UNO - Friday and Saturday - We righted the ship after the Ferris debacle. 2 VERY good games this past weekend which could result in a good run up to the holiday break! If that happens, look out! UNO is a good team with a lot of speed and fire power. What we did to them this weekend was impressive to say the least. Don't take our performance this past weekend lightly, people.
