Can we talk a little hockey (UConn Tourney)?

Enough with attendence threads and drinking scandals. How about some hockey?
What is everyone's outlook for the upcoming tourney? Personally, I think BG has a pretty good chance of winning the thing as we seem to have the better talent all around, and UMass, UConn and Army all look to be struggling mightily this year, especially in net. I would like to hear what some of you more familiar with the ECAC and HE than I think.

I'd be glad to take a break from the non-hockey rants.
I agree that we've got a good chance to win this tournament, and perhaps that could set the tone for a stronger second half. The field at this event is not strong, but I hope we come in prepared like we were going up against Wisconsin, Minnesota and North Dakota.
UMass (our first round opponent) is 5-10-0 (3-7-3 in Hockey East). Strange to see (so early in the season) that we have FOUR common opponents already this year. Boston College beat us, and has beaten UMass twice. UMass has BEATEN Merrimack and Clarkson, both of whom beat us. UMass, however LOST to St Lawrence, who we beat. UMass has several QUALITY wins, beating Boston University, Vermont and Colorado College.
They seem to have problems scoring goals...having lit the lamp only 27 times in 15 games (1.80 goals per game). They have never scored more than four in a game, but have won all four games in which they have scored four times. It looks to me as if they live or die with their goalies. They've used a two goalie rotation...Quick (a Freshman) is 3-5 with a 2.65 GAA and a .927 save %...Winer (a Senior) is 2-5 3.17/.910. Their leading scorer (Werner) has just 5-9-14, and nobody else has more than 9 points.
As much as I'd love to see us POUND these guys in to a bloody Mass of goo, I'd really prefer to see a methodical DEFENSIVE effort, taking advantage of whatever mistakes they make. I say BG 4, UMass 1.
Havn't had time to do any research on UConn or Army, but they both look pretty weak, and play in a conference that's actually equivalent to D2.
Just printed off the confirmation of our e-tickets. Flying out of Cleveland Thursday AM, non-stop to Hartford 1:20 flying time. who-hoo!

Thanks for the info on UMass, Freddie! We'll have to look each other up in Storrs - we may be among the few BG faithful there!

I too think we can go up there and get a pair of wins, and that's what this team needs. We've only won consecutive games once this year and our longest winning streak is two games. We're coming off a win in our last game, so if we can go up there and win a couple, it could be the spark we need to get rolling.

I think we have a pretty good chance of seeing any of the AZZ.com faithful for the arena barely seats 2,000.
This is a HUGE opportunity to get some confidence for the second half of the season. Living in NY and only 20 minutes from West Point, I have seen a few Army games and they are average at best. They play a lot of dump and chase and a lot of neutral ice play. Recruiting is the biggest challenge (as in all sports for Army). Don't know much about UConn...they get lost in the shuffle behind Hoops (men and women).

This is probably the weakest holiday tourney. Just what the doctor ordered. I agree we dont want to win 7-5 shootouts we need to pick up a man and play solid 3 on 3 down low in th D zone and take offensive oppurtunities when they come.
Good Chance to Win it

I feel BG has a real good chance to win the tournament (if ya want to call it a tournament, you only need 2 wins to win the thing). UMASS will probably be the toughest opponent. I really hope we play well up there, show the east coast what Falcon Hockey is all aobut! If we win the tourney and then come back and beat Colgate at Home, I think we will be ready to go with lots of confidence against OSU who we tied in C-bus back in October and vault us into a 2nd half run for home ice in the CCHA.
