When was the last time....

Post by BGSUfanatUT »

..you put all your Falcon hopes on the hockey team in September?

The football team is a good one, we all know this, but honestly, they are screwed, This is the one conference that 1 game can really kill the whole season. NIU has 2 games on us now. We have to run teh table, and hope that TWO other teams beat them yet this season. They get UT at home, and they have to go to Orlando....which doesnt say much. To have to rely on a UCF upset of NIU is bad. thats like going all in with a 7 5 offsuite, its just bad.

The basketball team(mens)....I love DD, I love went to HS wih Josh, John is a player, but we arent deep enough to compete for a MAC title I think.

Hockey is what we have left. As good at that sounds in one aspect, its pretty sad to say that in recent times. The last few years we've enjoyed a phenominal Football team. Before that happened, The basketball team was great, now, the 3rd dynasty is arrising....hockey...again.

Id would rather have the hockey team in NCAA contention again than any other sport, but really, its september, and Im losing hope already for the other teams. Yeah yeah yeah, I know what you will all say, but Its not a loss of faith in the football team, its jsut the fact that even if we beat everyone else 100 to 0, we still cant win the west without help from a UCF, or a directional michigan team. And the basketball team is clearly in a down period.

I dont know what compelled me to post this, I think it jsut came from talking durring the long ride home after the game last night at 3am. I guess its just comforting to think that we can put a lot of faith in our icers again.

Sitko will decapatate at least 1 guy this season, I guarantee it.

I am predicting about 1 guy PER weekend this year! He is the toughest, hardest hitter we have had in a LONG time. And he is a clean hitter, not a dirty player; he just hits like a MAC Truck!!! And he is FUN to watch. In answer to your original question, I always put my faith in the hockey team and start EACH new season with high hopes. This year, we are EXTREMELY excited about the possibilities that lie ahead of this team. The season starts 2 weeks from today with the Inter-Squat Scrimmage/Brown & Orange Game/Falcon Face-Off!! I CAN'T WAIT!!

WE'RE GONNA ROCK THE RINK, BAAAABBBBBBYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The last time was...

Post by TheKa »

I guess I put my hopes in the hockey team each and every season...and have for 28 seasons now! :D I really have hope for a GREAT season for the team this year...I just have this feeling...I can't explain it. Having the hated Green Meanies in here twice this season just has me pumped up. I can't wait to face them for the first time in December.

I think we all need to work together to think of a nickname for Sitko, since MAC TRUCK is already taken! I wonder what Truck would say about him. Truck has always been one of my favorite Falcons, but most of Sitko's hits put Truck to shame! HAHA! I remember last year during the 1984 weekend when Sitko made a HUGE hit, I looked directly at Iain Duncan, who was sitting a few rows from us and even his jaw dropped!

I'm so excited to see the hockey board getting so much action this early in the season...and all of it being positive! Now if we can just keep our little friend that drove us to the brink of insanity last year quiet for awhile, we can bask in the glow of the early season!

GO FALCONS!
GO GREEN! GO WHITE! GO SUCK AN EGG!!

I hope you all didnt mis-understand me when I said when was the last time you put your faith in the hockey team....etc. i mean, puting our faith in them to not embarrass the univ. as a whole. granted the Football team isnt embarassing us at all. but they have a small chance to win the MAC now, regardless of how good we play from now on. The basketball team...well, they are the basketball team.

I mean, when was the last time you thought of the hockey team as the best chance we had to win a conference title in a long time?

Sitko is just John. He is one of those hard-arse guys that needs a nickname that isnt so masculine, b/c he crushes people's head so badly.

i will disagree with his clean hitting though. Not saying he is a dirty fighter or anything, but do you remember how blake hit? When he hit a guy, the guy went down, and Blake didnt miss a step. it didnt even slow him down. john hits likes like a MACK truck yes, but it also slows him down a little bit when he does, he could stand to lessen his force, to add sme balance and recovery time to his own hits. This lets him take out an opponent, while not hindering himself at all.

sorry for any worse than normal spelling errors, I'm not feeling the most sober I have felt in quite some time ;)

The Terminator, Truck and ??????

Post by Falcon Fanatic »

When I watched Sitko hit during his freshman, I was immediately reminded of Iain Duncan, aka The Terminator!! Truck, also was a hard, scappy player and VERY FUN to watch, but he wasn't always the "cleanest" player on the ice (as his penalty minutes would show  ). Truck would retaliate too much, Sitko usually just skates away. And on this particular team, that is a good quality. Paluch won't stand for anyone taking needless penalties game after game, that's for sure!! I think Truck would be riding the pines too often on this team. Maybe that's why he and York often didn't see eye to eye.

Also of note: I thought it was AWESOME when the 2003-04 team presented the 1983-84 team their anniversary jerseys, that #24 Jon Sitko presented to #24 Iain Duncan! I thought, "How Freakin' Cool is that????" I thought it was good karma for our future!!! :supz:

So we DO need to come up with a good nickname for Sitko!! I wonder if the team has one. I am sure they do, I think everyone gets one when they come in, but many times its based on their last name. I will check and see if I can find out anything, however, I think we fans need to give Sitko an appropriate name discriptive of his best quality!!!

Like many of you, I am also pretty excited over the number of postings and chatter on this board. It's been way tooooooo long overdue!! I think it will get continually busier as the season rolls along. In fact, I KNOW IT WILL!! :D Others just need to jump in here, too!!!

DROP THE PUCK!!!!

One more thing...

Post by Falcon Fanatic »

BGSUfanatUT: I didn't really answer your question regarding winning a conference title. I don't believe for a minute that it will happen this year, the Weasels up north are LOADED with returning players and have lost little to graduation, along with highly drafted Montoya returning in goal. That said, do I think we can compete head to head with them...ABSOLUTELY!!

My thinking here is "cautious optimism" and knowing that we are on the verge of a huge breakthrough in the league standings. When you've been a bottom feeder for a LONG time, just moving up the standings and having weekend sweeps can get us all excited and hoping for a return to the glory days of Falcon Hockey!! What is turning that tide of "cautious optimism" to TRUE OPTIMISM, is that we are seeing a team NOT GIVING UP even when we go down a goal or two. It's a team that digs down harder at the end of a close game. It's a team that is fun to watch again!!

We WILL be a NATIONAL contender again, and very soon. Of that, I have NO DOUBT.

TIME TO ROCK THE RINK, BABY!!!

Jon put on a clinic up at Lake State. He caught one guy with a perfect hip check along the boards - the Laker pinwheeled horizontally at least one and a half revolutions, before hitting the edge of the glass by the bench and landing on the ice.
Talk to his dad sometime - he spent a lot of time teaching Jon how to get good position to make an effective, legal hit. Mr. Sitko also had a hand in coaching a youngster named Matt Ruchty.
All is for the best in this best of all possible worlds.

do you guys remember the game last year(I dont know which one myself), but if you saw it you know. Sitko was int eh box with seconds left ont eh penalty, and the opponent player was skating full throtle down the boards with the puck, penalty ends, Jon opens the dor and commits homicide on the clueless foe. It was glory to be had. I wish I could remember which game it was though.

Seriously, I've not felt this much excitement in the air concerning BG hockey (except from my wife, of course) in a long, long time! There's always been a feeling of cautious optimism prior to a season that quickly faded away after the season started. But this year seems different...almost everyone I talk to expects the team to be more than competetive this year (except falconboy, of course) and win more games than we lose.

The only down side is the cluster we're in....then, again, depending on how the team reacts this year it could be an upside! If we are able to split with MSU and UM it will open up some eyes!!!

October can't get here soon enough!

Im not sure how the logistics of it all are done, but if we have a Rugby Conference, I think that would be the safest bet year after year.

I dont think we'll win the CCHA this year, but Ill be damned if we dont host a playoff game, at least the CCHA will allow us to do that if we qualify, unlike some organitaztions....Im looking at you NIT commity.....

I agree with you totally! I do believe we will host a playoff game this year!! After that, well, we will just have to see how far we can go. The Road to the Joe may begin in BG this year!!!! :partyman:

Especially since we play them so late in the season. I expect two hard fought, but well earned wins by the Falcons when they visit Cowtown!!!
