Ok, the other day I was trying to think of ways to get people out to the games, and I came up with an idea.
I have noticed - from talking to people around campus - that a large reason why people don't go to the games is because they don't know when they are. Because of this, I think it might be a good idea to put together flyers of some sort to post up on the kiosks around campus. These don't necessarily have to be made every home game, but big ones I think should be heavily considered.
I was all hyped up to do this myself, but then realized that I am a terrible graphic designer, not to mention that I do not own photoshop anymore.
If anyone else thinks this is a good idea and is willing to help, let me know, I have a few ideas, but don't have the skill or tools to pull them off.

Ummmmmmmm I dont know about this year....but I know every other year since 2001 there have been these crazy little things called table tents....and no one reads those...nor do they read flyers.....you have to do something creative cause the honest truth is that college kids as a majority dont chose to use the resources around them to educate themselves!

The best way would be to hit up the circle K and glue flyers to cases of beer....but I dont think that would fly either!

To be completely honest, I have read plenty of table tents and made decisions to go to events because of them.
I'm not saying it's the be all-end all of promotion, but the worst a nice looking flyer posted around campus could do is maybe show some appreciation for the team, and at best attract some people to the game who might otherwise have stayed home.

I would recommend emailing the marketing department with your concerns and ideas. CC the message to Paul Krebs too!! I love your ideas, and think it's great, but do you have the money and resources to do this? I did the cheer flyer because we had a lot of alumni back and was so frustrated with the lack of good, organized cheers that I just went ahead and did it. I have been told that the marketing department took notice (via an assistant AD) and that more of the same may be done for future games...WOOO-HOOO!!! Good luck in your quest...hope it all works out!! Word of mouth to all of your friends and their friends will help too!!!

My school sends out an email every week with that week's events on campus. We don't have sports or anything so I usually just trash it, but it might be something worth considering.

I'm suprised they don't broadcast a weekly newsletter of upcoming events to every bgsu.edu address...sure, most would delete it without even looking at it, but any mass marketer would love to have such a targeted, captive mailing list.

I'm a big fan of having players/coaches invite students to the game from the Union during the busy lunch hours. Say on a wed and or thurs of a big game weekend. . .

Where is Sic Sic? They always used to put signs up at the union and that is how people used to figure out what was going on.

Anderson Arena has that huge sign that says game today/tonight...

Can't marketing get a bit old fold up sign for Hockey- Game tonight and put one or two of them around campus?

Ideas- We want more- we want more :D

I will agree with everyones comments regarding marketing at BG. IT SUCKS!

Everyone has a "great idea" on how to do things, but no one ever does anything. Like on all college campuses, it takes a committee to schedule the next meeting.

E-mail blasts, TV/newspaper ads, are all great, but if no one is paying attention, what is the use.

The one sure way to get people in the "house" is to WIN! That's right, WIN! When you have a program that goes through a long stretch of losing, students realize there are other things to do in town. Just ask USC or UCLA. They have been winning in football the last few years, but sans their game against each other and against Notre Dame, they don't sell-out. Sure there is a lot to do in LA, but when you suck, like they did for a few years, people find other things to do. Here in Columbus, the men's baskeball team at OSU is 11-1 for the first time in 15 years, but there are plenty of seats left for the remaining home games. None have sold out. Could it be that they sucked for a few years?

WIN DAMMIT! WIN! Then you won't have to worry about putting butts in the seats.

A six game winning streak and a sweep over OSU should do the trick then, eh?
I have to admit, over the last few games I have seen more people (a surprisingly large crowd for the OSU shutout), but hopefully it'll continue.

It's true. Unless you're providing a truly unique/amazing in-arena experience (see the Blue Jackets, no one does it better), a good season will pack them in. I remember last year during Jordan's Hobey campaign we got a lot of students in. I'm starting to notice an increase there too.

It took several years for the crowds to thin out after Holzinger graduated and the program took a nose dive. The town's people want the program to succeed but they also want to watch good hockey, which has been sorely missing the last decade. Those of us who have stuck it out have noticed the change in the on ice attitude of the team and the better play, even when losing the last couple of years. It's been fun, if somewhat frustrating at times, to watch the turn around progress. But it will take some convincing to get the other townies to come back. A six game winning streak and a sweep of OSU is a good start, but, let's face it, we were playing OSU last weekend which is always a decent draw. I don't expect as big of a local draw Friday night for the simple reason that it's Western Michigan we're playing and NOT MSU, UM, or OSU. I sincerely hope I'm wrong.

The students being back will help as well as the current winning streak. I'll guess about 3000 will show up on Friday night, but I'm hoping for 4300+. If that happens then will know that the town's people are taking notice.
