It sounded to me like we just ran into a line that was hot as hell, and more specifically a winger in Walton. That said, though, there really is no excuse to get beat so badly by one line. There weren't many other Bronco lines that seemed like they were pulling much over on BG, and one would think that a team would figure out a way - either through traps or hard forechecking - to shut down a single line. Especially after Walton's third goal, there is no reason that he and his line should have gotten the fourth (I can't remember if any of his goals came on the PP).

Anyhow, I think Paluch is going to be able to pull quite a few lessons from this game to pass on to the boys. You can't win six in a row, come out flat, and expect to win. No one in college hockey is a total pushover. As BGfan (I think) pointed out earlier in the week, BG the past few years has been notorious for being streaky. I think this team has the talent and the confidence to overcome that trend this year, a characteristic that teams the past few years have been lacking, but it has to start tomorrow on the road. With the game tomorrow and the game against FSU on Monday, we still have a chance to pick up 4 points this weekend, but we are losing games in hand to a lot of teams. There is no sitting back now!

It wasn't so much as we ran into a hot line, as it was we ran into a horrible team. Yes, we were flat and that needs to be addressed. As well as Unger, Foster, and Falk played together last weekend, I wish they would have gotten some shifts together in the third. Matsumoto, Svendson, and Pilkington wouldn't have been a bad combination either. Matsumoto and Svendson play really well together on the powerplay. The FFM line seemed off tonight for some reason. I don't konw if it was just the defense they were facing, or if it went deeper than that. Mixing the lines up in the third isn't always a bad idea. Sometimes, it will create a different feel on the ice and give some players an extra step in their game.

Western didn't have a forecheck until the last 5 minutes of the game. No player really got deeper in the zone than the faceoff dots. Every time we left our zone, we ran into 5 players in the neutral zone. It was a horrible game to watch with all the clutching and grabbing happening.

Reading the recap on USCHO, I find it funny that the Western coach thought it was an up tempo game. It was anything but. My dad and I both thought the game was really boring, and not just because of the score. The first goal of the game really seemed to take the life out of BG tonight.

“I was pleased, obviously, with the victory,” said Culhane. “It was a tremendous hockey game. As quick as I’ve seen, certainly through the first 20 minutes of play.”

What is it about trying to get a win against WMU? We can't beat them in football, basketball, and now hockey? It was disappointing to see our winning streak stopped at home by a four-win team, especially after losing a 3-1 lead early on. But like I said in another post, three of the four previous wins for WMU were against ranked teams, so we had to be ready. But another lowlight about this game for BG was, this was WMU's first road win of the season. Prior to this game, WMU was 0-8-3 on the road. Oh well, let's start a new streak tomorrow night in Kalamazoo. Go BG!!!

Turnovers were killing us, and our defense seemed to lack the ability to put a body on a body in the middle of the defensive zone that they had in the OSU game. Also, something that was killing me (literally, nearly gave me a heart attack) was the inability to convert all of those great scoring chances - whether it was the goalie making good saves or us just not getting the puck in the right spot.
Good performances by a few, but a few of our players just looked really tired.
Specifically, Matsumoto at a few times just looked absolutely winded. This could easily be a product of coming off cold from his suspension, though.
Pretty disappointed overall, but it's natural for a team to stumble once in awhile, what's important is finding the drive to come back and kick it all back into gear.

I honestly thought the difference was Horrell tonight. He just didn't seem to be on his game. He seemed to let in a lot more "soft" goals then usual. I haven't looked at the stat sheet yet, so my opinion may change.

From my vantage point it didn't seem like any of them showed up tonight with their heads fully in it. They put one in on us early, but we responded almost instantly negating the lead. However, flat play coupled with blatant neutral zone obstruction by the Broncos really kept the pace at a crawl.

That being said, the team still didn't seem to have a full gust of wind in their sails tonight. One can only hope they show up as the team we saw last week when they travel to the Zoo tomorrow.

They still have a chance to pick up 4 pts on this extended weekend (if you count Monday's game) and they've proven they are capable of putting a high octane offense on the ice, with a defensive group that can finish checks and cut down the passing lanes.

If we can show up with more energy and jump tomorrow, then we should be able to split the series with WMU. However, it's just a matter of what team is going to show up, but i'm confident that it won't be the same one as tonight.[/u]

I thought your observations were right on. I also thought Western played really well when they needed to. That Walton kid....KILLED us...he must have had a career game last night.

Oh, well...game over...time to move on....BEAT WESTERN!!!

The last goal that Horrel let in looked pretty weak to me, but in total I think everyone is right that our head's weren't in the game last night. Perhaps they were upset that we took the last Guinness I don't know what it was, but that WMU team didn't impress me much...we just played a very poor game. I hope we can come out and get the split tonight; you have to beat teams like WMU.

You threw the whole atmosphere off by taking those last two Guiness! Those had my name on them and it's become somewhat of a ritual of late. Hockey players are superstitious, you know. Change the routine and it throws everything off!

BG had beaten WMU 3 straight in football until this year. BG women hoops have beaten them the last few games. Softball and baseball as well. You're right about men's hoops.

It sounded to me like BG was just flat last night. Get them tonight!
