Why wasn't there a home run play? Couldn't Kate have just booked towards our basket and Ali heaved it?

Yes, but if Kate somehow misses without touching the ball and it goes OB, Vandy gets the ball to inbound under their own basket needing a 2 to tie and 3 to win.
