BG women coming along well
BG women coming along well
I just wanted to say that I believe it is going to be another banner year for the BG Women's Basketball Team.
Yes, some of you may have been doubting this team after its 0-2 start, but BG has won 5 straight and has 3 more home games in which they should win and go onto an 8-2 record.
Now looking at the 2 BG losses. They are not as bad as you think they are.
We lost our first game to Temple. Temple is 4-2, and its 2 losses are to Rutgers and Auburn. Rutgers was a final four team the past 2 years, and Temple had a 3 point lead with 4:20 left, only to lose that game by a basket and 2 made FT's in the final few seconds. Rutgers also lost to Auburn, a top SEC team on the road. Temple was without 2 players in that game. Those 2 players could have gave valuable minutes and depth and also without them may have disrupted the team chemisty. SO BG losing to Temple doesn't look so bad.
BG other loss was to VALPO. Valpo is 3-1 at the moment. There only loss was at Central Michigan. They led in this game by 5 points with 6 minutes left, only to lose by 6 points. In this game VALPO had a player out with the flu. Central is to compete in the MAC WEST.
Fans, our team is 5-2. Soon to be 8-2, after 3 more home wins (they should win) This team is starting to gel and come together. We won last night over Detroit by 30 pts. Detroit beat #23 ranked Georgia last week.
In our game last night Breske, went scoreless and Lauren only had 13 points. It is going to watch these girls begin to roll over the remainder of the year. And just think, we only have one senior on this team!! This team will be fun to watch next few years!!
GO BG!!

CMU was HORRIBLE last year. Either they've come a long way in a hurry, or that was a bad loss for Valporaiso. I'm guessing it's the latter.
But anyway, I think our team is doing fine. I admit I was a little perturbed after the Valpo loss, as I expected a loss to Temple, but the ladies have responded very well. This looks like it is going to be another great year.

Central Michigan is 5-2 this year. They lost 2 games at Dayton and at Georgetown, by a combined 7 points! We all know how good Dayton is suppose to be.
Also, look at this: BG won't get the largest home MAC attendance this year.
MOUNT PLEASANT -- In front of a record-setting crowd of 4,478 the Central Michigan women’s basketball team battled a strong Valparaiso team for 40 minutes and came away with an 86-80 victory at Rose Arena on Tuesday.

Wow, how did CMU pull that off? From what I gather we used to get attendance like that in either the late 80's or early 90's. Have no idea why we got such good attendance back then but have struggled to average more than 1500 a game over the past 4 years when we've owned the Mac and been to the NCAA's 3 times. When you think about it , it really is astonishing that we aren't averaging more than this.gmartin wrote:Central Michigan is 5-2 this year. While its great to see the improvement in the team, I'm not ready to say we will soon be 8-2. I think we beat Youngstown State Saturday, but I'm not ready to say we will for sure win the two are that. St. Bonnie's controlled most of the game last season until we finally got over the hump and pulled away, they are currently 5-1 and have a huge game Sunday when they host Michigan State. As for Hartford they advanced to the 2nd round of the NCAA tournament last season, and while they are 4-4 right now one of those four wins was against Duke. I think as fans right now we need to take it the way the team does, one game at a timegmartin wrote:I just wanted to say that I believe it is going to be another banner year for the BG Women's Basketball Team.

Why was attendance good for the Women's game of the late 80s and 90s. AFFORDABLE. I remember the days of Stephanie Coe, Jackie Motyka, Paulette Backstrom, etc. Tickets for Students were only 2.00. Many times it was buy one get one free. Popcorn was 1.00, a can of Pop was $.50
Plus you are forgetting our Mens program was decent as well back then. The women's games in the 80s and 90s were part of the Dbl Header so people would then come to TWO GAMES for 2 bucks!!

That CMU crowd was pretty much all comprised of elementary school students on organized field trips. They played the game last Tuesday at noon and bussed entire classes of school kids in from a bunch of local schools.
An interesting promotion, but for comparison sake the attendance for their other home game was 572 on a Saturday afternoon. Who knows, but I doubt they end the season with a higher ave than BG.
BG's attendance these days could be better, but all things considered its quite good compared to most. There have only been a very small number of games historically where the attendance approached 4K. The house was absolutely rocking when they hosted a 1st round NCAA tournament against Florida in the early 90's. The noise level and student turnout was awesome. I'd guess that game has to be the highest attendance all-time. They hosted two other NCAA games during that era and had a couple great crowds for games against UT when both programs were powers at the same time, and far above the rest of the MAC. But even in those days, those kinds of crowds were the exception not the norm.

I would not worry about Valpo. They have won the 2 games after the CMU loss including defeating Florida State 90-74. The CMU loss was just a bad game for the Crusaders. If Valpo continues to be strong the loss will not hurt us in SOS.

Brewer is spot on. However, the other piece to that promotion was they gave each one of those kids a season ticket voucher when they left. Now it is unlikely that they will show up for every game, but the ones that they do show up for, they will probably come with their parents who will have to purchase a ticket, or two, or three. Not a bad idea.brewer wrote:That CMU crowd was pretty much all comprised of elementary school students on organized field trips.
