Another Bracket projection

Post by gmartin »

Jerry Palm of CollegeRPI and CBS Sportsline predicts BG #12 seed against Notre Dame in South Bend. I like this matchup as I then like the second round game game against an over rated Iowa State, and then the weaker of what I believe are the #1 seeds.

Close to home as well, and Liz Honneger and Ali Mann would sure to bring lots of friends and family.

I would love an #11 or #12 seed. There's great teams at the top, and then there's teams clearly superior to us from #5 down to about #10-12. That's it. After that, I feel pretty certain that we could handle the 4's, 5's, and 6's if we shoot well, don't turn the ball over, and do a serviceable job on the boards (ie: don't get murdered).

The thing that's scaring me though, is that nobody is putting us above 11 or 12. That tells me that there might still be a possibility that we get left out of this thing entirely if we lose in the MAC tournament. I know once that somebody went 27-3 and didn't go, but say we made the finals against Ball State. If BSU were to beat us (which I don't think would be much of an upset seeing as they are 20-8 and 48th in the RPI), you mean to honestly say we'd be dumped at 29-3? THAT, would be the crock of the century.

WELCOME TO REALITY!

Yes - it is entirely possible that we will not be invited to the B!G show if we do not win the MAC Tourney title.

Well, this discussion is rendered moot now.

Yeah, our chance at an at-large bid is now .00001% (that small amount being the chance of a clerical error resulting in them accidentally putting us in)

There is no beauty in the conference tournaments. The team that proves itself over the long 3 month grind of the regular season is the team that should go to the big NCAA tourney. Conference tournaments make no sense for mid-major conferences. And for big conferences, they usually turn out to be supefluous. There are few upsets and they just affect seeding for the big tourney. Besides what coach wants to play 3 or 4 consecutive days and then have tired legs for the big dance. Conference tournaments were originally created to bring in more TV revenue.

Each conference decides how they wish its automatic bid to be awarded. Most conferences award their auto bid to the winner of the conference tourney and not to the regular season champion.

If the MAC wanted to award the auto bid to the team that finished in 3rd place, it could do so if a majority of institutions approved doing so.

Personally, I would tell all conference schools to schedule as many games OOC as you can and your first conference game would be at the tourney in Cleveland.

That kinda defeats the point of having a conference though, doesn't it? :-)
