Toledo - MAC Champs

Post by gmartin »

Toledo beat EMU 65-64 this evening. With the win UT is the 2010-2011 Regular Season MAC Champs. Ending BG long streak of MAC titles. Only one thing to do now for BG. Let's go to Cleveland and ruin their NCAA hopes by winning the MAC Tournament.

I think BG can still tie for the title if UT loses out. UT needs a win or BG loss to win outright, IINM. Tough game tonight.

Congratulations, Toledo. It's about time for Tricia to get another job now.

True buy UT still #1 seed due to their own over BG. I don't see UT losing its last two games either. Personally I want them to keep winning. Help out BG RPI, which actually is 43 and getting better and still higher than UT. I want UT to win out and win both games in the MAC tournament and then lose to BG in the final. Nothing would please me more than UT losing in the final and the fans complaining how they got robbed of an at large bid and how other mediocre teams, with 12 losses got in :) Should be a great tournament

So, I'm to assume that Falcon fans would not be upset, that in the event of BG (top 50 RPI) losing in the MAC final, and being possibly left out of the tourney ... Yeah, right !!!
Bottom line, both UT and BG deserve to be in over a 12 loss team...

FACT - If BG or UT loses in the MAC tournament, they are not going to be selected for the NCAA tourney.

One or both might deserve to be in over a 12 loss team, but if that team is from the ACC, Big East, Big 10-soon-to-be-12, Big 12-soon-to-be-10, PAC-10, or SEC it ain't gonna' happen.

Yep. This is a one bid conference and that is all it deserves. We just don't have the out of conference wins to claim anything else...and the losses are really bad losses.

I will say Toledo's turnaround did pretty much start with the beginning of MAC play. There are a couple solid mid-majors in the MAC and something like five teams with a shot at twenty wins but a lot of those have come at the expense of their MAC sistren.

I agree in principle that both Toledo and Bowling Green should be dancing, in particular since MAC teams have fared well in tournament play the past 4-5 years, but BG's losses have been killers and Toledo really didn't play that well in their OOC games. It's not impossible for either team to make it, but I'd bet against it at this point.

EDIT: Toledo's RPI right now is 46, Bowling Green's is 47. That's definitely in the bubble zone, but a good data point is 37, which was BG's RPI in 2009 when the Falcons were jipped.

Doesn't matter unless they lose to the other. Any other loss, even in the finals will drop their RPI like a stone. Even a win over the other Division champ won't provide much of a boost to the winner and the loser will drop enough to take them out of contention, IMO. The women are more of a power than the men in the MAC but still negligible on the national scene.

Northern upset Toledo today 57-53. A UT loss on Wednesday to CMU and a BG win over Buffalo will give BG a share of the MAC title.

A Toledo fan over on rebkell said that she was very worried about a potential letdown loss in Dekalb following their clinching the regular season title. I guess that's what happened. Either that, or the Rockets are starting to run out of gas, they needed a big comeback late to beat EMU at home the game previous.

I think the question is now, is there a chance that somebody OTHER than BG or Toledo will win the MAC tournament. Kent State and Central Michigan both have a win over the NW Ohio twosome, and Eastern Michigan's been close against both but couldn't finish. This could be the most wide open and deep tournament we've had since I started following MAC basketball.
