BG vs Ohio

Post by elmrfudd »

Well, the ladies took a 15-point loss on the chin tonight to a very talented Ohio Bobcat squad. BG took a 1-point lead early in the third quarter, only to fall behind by 19 in a few short minutes. Here is my analysis of the game. First of all, it was the worst officiating that I have witnessed so far this season, though that was not the sole reason for the Falcons losing. The Falcons beat themselves, in spite of Ohio's quickness and overall talent. We played a good first half, once we overcame the early turnovers. Our rebounding (or lack there of) was extremely atrocious. Our defense of Ohio's three-point shooters was non-existent. Once again, we get pounded by our opponent from behind the arc because of an ineffective 2-3 zone defense. To keep from getting beat from long range, you have to spread the defense, but you risk vulnerability inside. I'd still rather give up 2's rather than 3's. I think Roos should at least try a man-to-man occasionally to try and diminish their opponents' long-range shooting. You can't keep doing the same thing and expect a different result. Also, I see Sidney Lambert as a future All-MAC player and a great floor leader. She had a very good game tonight, but didn't get much help from her supporting cast, aside from occasional scoring from Tibbs. We are twelve games into the season now, and each player should have their roles clearly defined by now. So far, Lambert is one of the few players on the team to assert themselves and impose her will on the opposition. I don't want to see this team settle into mediocrity, and get so accustomed to losing that winning a game becomes a major accomplishment. Again, a team's successes or failures usually originates from the top. I still believe we have a lot of talent on this team, but it's high time that talent is maximized to its fullest potential. And to this point, it has not been. You can do this, Falcons! See you next Wednesday! Talons up!

Haven't been on here in quite awhile.
Yes the officials were awful, all the MAC games so far it's been true. saw them all in person. tired of playing 8

3/5 of the starters were elsewhere last season. some from last yr. still feeling affects? more hurt than advertised

Erica was big part of offense so still adjusting. this happened after trip to UNCW so puzzle pieces not together

MAC season has proven that being #1 seed for tourney not good.

am still with this group must get bucket to stop throwing ball out

comparing to Curt's teams unfair. His teams made league mad and everybody got better

upset with the HC they took resumes

time to be patient, watch what happens next and be supportive

or stay home and not let it bother you

This team has been brutal for the past year and a half... there's no denying that... and it's OK to acknowledge it. In the midst of that, the coaches have to expect some heat. Find me a job where months of failure are excused and shrugged off... or don't...I don't think I would want a job with the bar set that low.
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.

Thanks for that acknowledgement, Flipper! I disagree with the above statement "comparing to Curt's teams unfair", simply because Coach Roos is an extension of Curt, being his associate and assistant coach for all those years. So why is it wrong to make comparisons? Curt commanded excellence, and it was reflected in his teams' performances. I've not seen that the last year or so, since all of Curt's recruits have gone. Also, Donovan's absence has made very little impact on the team's lack of consistency. The mention of me being upset with Roos is ridiculous. We all reap what we sow, and she is not exempt. I started following this team and have been an avid fan of this team since Kate Achter was a freshmen, and have been a loyal follower ever since. But I'm insulted by being told to stay home because I share a few honest opinions on this blog. I've always said that I will ALWAYS call them like I see them, and that's what I will continue to do. If some on this blog want to continue to defend the team's inconsistency, and make excuses for their lackluster performances, that's okay. I believe these coaches and players need to command excellence, expect excellence, then achieve excellence. I refuse to SETTLE for mediocrity, or less. If I did, as a fan, THAT is what would be unfair to this team. GO FALCONS!!!!

Couldn't agree more with elmerfudd and Flipper. I've been a season ticket holder since the '90's and I'm getting concerned that we may be heading in the same direction we did when Jacki Clark replaced Fran Voll. We continued to get worse until Curt Miller became our coach. Yes, the rest of the MAC is getting better. Why aren't we????????

I'm kind of like Elmr in that I analyze numbers and situations to draw a conclusion. Watch several games on the computer and also compare scores with our upcoming opponents. Other threads have said wait for the MAC season and then we will see what we have. Well the MAC season is here and I am not hopeful at all. At this time, I see a 16-18 loss season. There will be some upsets but outside of Miami and Kent and maybe N. Illinois , I'm not sure who we are better than. The remaining players (I believe Donovan was a Miller recruit) all are on the current staff. They generally have been slow to develop with the junior class really not contributing much at all. Most of the freshmen from last year , who received a ton of playing last season due to injuries, have regressed or are very inconsistent. We seem to recruit a lot of the same type of players from either small towns, suburban and private schools. The makeup of our team on a diversity basis is vastly different than the rest of the MAC. Right now BG has one non-white player, the average of all MAC WBB teams is 7-8 on the roster with 4 being the next lowest. We are quite the outlier in that regard. And I know many of Curt's team were similarly built but the current situation is not working well. It makes one wonder about the way this roster has been built. Thank goodness for Tibbs' availability as a 5th year student or the situation would be considerably bleaker. Regardless, I am hoping that the staff can garner more consistency in the team to at least prove my loss prediction overstated. A MAC title run does seem out of the question.

Several people have reached out with their views about this team and their relationship to it.
After 4 games, I sense that you are not happy.
My side: been following since 1970's that would be Hager
Jaci Clark won games. I think Dee is the one who had "the lost years"
Small towns= Motyca, LoPro, Mann do I need to go on?
Go back and look at rosters of Fran's and Curt's teams
Recruiting coordinator for Curt....Jennifer
Defensive head for Curt= Jennifer

In post game last night Jennifer acknowledged that they heard the negativity of the crowd on missed shots. This is what needs to go away. It snowballs into missing shots. They are still playing and shooting. I'm tired of the basket having the "flu". She said they will continue to work which starts at 6:30 am every morning. I have seen every MAC game last year thru yesterday. I will continue to believe they can and will produce. There are 14 games left. Regular season is seeding for the tourney. You can continue to feel as you feel. I choose to see the glass half full and believe in this team. I will continue to cheer them on positively at these games weather permitting. I won't give up on them, 'cause they're still in there working. Your opinion is your and I have mine. All our typing may have no affect on the outcome, although I feel someone from the staff monitors this forum.

I stand corrected - we were 21-8 Jaci's last season here and I would be overjoyed to see a season like that again!!!!
As for the small towns - love small towns - as long as the players show talent.
I'm all for cheering the girls along but it's extremely difficult when they aren't hitting the broad side of a barn!!! There are some really talented players. The freshman point guard is amazing. I genuinely hope they can shake the poor shooting off. I'm just not seeing improvement in the players that have been here awhile and that is what concerns me.

I understand where you're coming from, BGSUE. However, I cannot see the resolve and the intestinal fortitude in these girls that it takes to be competitive at this level. When joining a Division I college program, athletically, transition must take place from the high school level to the college level. With the majority of the players on this team, this has not happened yet. And I believe that under this coaching staff, many of these girls will never reach their full potential as players. We cannot continue to play high school basketball at the college level. I said that Sidney Lambert is the best player on the team, not because she's quick, a great ball handler, or a great shooter, but because she has the heart and desire to maximize her abilities. It sets her apart from the others because her drive sticks out like a sore thumb. Kennedy Kirkpatrick has potential to be a great scorer, inside and out, but thus far has not taken the initiative to do so. Rachel Myers and Carly Santoro are loaded with talent, but are still learning to adapt to this level, and they don't appear to be playing with a lot of confidence. I, too, look at the glass as half full, when indeed it IS HALF FULL. As it stands now, our glass is neither half full nor half empty, buy only contains a few drops. I truly hope you are right, BGSUE, and the Falcons can be competitive in this league. I will gladly eat my words, accordingly. I believe I'm seeing this team as they are, with both eyes wide open, and I'm just not seeing it happening this season. Concerning your statement about me not being happy, I totally disagree. Ask the coaches and players if they are happy with the way they're playing. Ask the rest of the fans if they are happy to see the Falcons get beat up on by the other cellar-dwellers of the MAC, along with being victimized by poor officiating. I have much compassion for these girls and what they've gone through the last two seasons. Much of it is through no fault of their own. If these coaches are good, show me! If these girls really want to win, show me. We are not the Cleveland Browns fans, telling others to "Just wait till next year". We are Bowling Green Women's Basketball, and we have a standard to live up to. Let's just do what it takes to get it done! No excuses! GO FALCONS!!!!!!!
