BGSU vs. Virginia

Post by elmrfudd »

Well, the ladies played well for the first quarter, but Virginia made the necessary adjustments, overtook the Falcons, and won going away. Granted, Virginia was a good team, however, the margin of victory, I believe, would have been far less if the Falcons would have taken care of the ball. We could make excuses and say that we were too young, too small, and Virginia was too talented. BGSU has had teams in the past that would have beaten this Virginia squad. In the last three seasons, our women have not improved. Midway through the second quarter, we lost our focus and never regained it. Virginia made changes when something wasn't working for them. BGSU did not. When is this team going to learn how to pass the ball effectively, set high screens legally, and impose themselves offensively against their opponents? We did not have a clue how to crack Virginia's defensive schemes. The basketball became a hot potato for the Falcons, as they struggled to find open shots or passing lanes. I was hoping this season would be different than the last two. Upperclassmen have shown little improvement since their freshman years. Winning has no longer become an expectation, but a hopeful possibility. We have gone from a program of excellence to a program attempting to rise to the level of mediocrity. I'm sure that Coach Roos believed in the Curt Miller system that she has been a part of since being his associate, but Miller's system is no longer working, because he's no longer steering the ship. I'm sure some readers here think this post is too harsh, but this is what I'm seeing. I refuse to wear rose-colored glasses and make excuses for our lackluster play. I realize we've won three straight after dropping the first four, but it's time for Coach Roos to make some changes, because doing the same thing for the last 2+ seasons are not producing different results. I am still a huge fan of BGSU women's basketball, and will continue to be one. Ladies, regardless of my posts, I still wish you great success the rest of the season! GO FALCONS! Just my honest opinion.

I see your point...i'm waiting to see how the MAC shakes out but we aren't producing like we once did.

It is sad. Fran Voll and Curt Miller were two of the best we have ever had or ever will have. Roos has proven that she cannot recruit and especially coach. It is time to let her go. I haven't looked but I bet attendance is now 1/10th what it was with a Miller team. So sad. It's too bad Miller had issues.

Well, falcon83, sadly Coach Roos has struggled big time since all of Curt's recruits have graduated. Curt was powerful in recruiting, bonding the team together, coaching, motivation, and player development. Even though Roos was a part of Curt's realm all those years as his assistant/associate, she has failed to inherit the qualities that made Curt so successful. I want to see her have every opportunity to succeed, but it appears she's digging her hole a little deeper with each passing season. Although I believe she has some good talent this year, I really believe she has no idea how to make them better.

Yep...I look at a player like Haley Puk...she has the length and shot to be a very productive SG or SF...but she plays in the post more often than not. And her basketball IQ and court awareness...how the system should flow doesn't seem to have developed at all since she got here.
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.
