CLEVELAND, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - Bowling Green State University junior Liz Vrabel has been named a Mid-American Conference Pitcher of the Week, the conference office announced late Monday (April 4). Vrabel earns the honor for the second time this season and the fifth time in her Falcon career.
Vrabel, a native of Allison Park, Pa. (North Allegheny HS), had a record of 3-1 and an earned-run average of 3.18 last week. Her lone loss was a complete-game effort vs. the number-one team in the nation, Michigan.
In her other three appearances on the week, Vrabel was 3-0 with a 1.87 ERA. She had 28 strikeouts in 22 innings on the week, including a whopping 14 in the final game at Northern Illinois. That tied her career high. Vrabel walked just five batters in her 22 innings.
In the Northern Illinois series, Vrabel was 2-0 with a 2.00 ERA, allowing a total of just eight hits in 14 innings. In four MAC games this season to date, she is 3-1 and has given up only 16 hits in 28 innings (an average of 4.00 per game).
On the season, Vrabel is now 8-8 with a 2.58 ERA and 112 strikeouts in 105 2/3 innings. She has won seven of her last nine decisions after starting the season with a 1-6 mark.
Vrabel was named the league pitcher of the week for the West Division. Amy Hudson of Central Michigan was the division's player of the week, while Marshall's Gina Guzzo and Miami's Jackie Poggendorf earned player- and pitcher-of-the-week honors, respectively, for the East Division.
The Falcons are now 13-18 overall after Monday's 5-1 win at Valparaiso, and BGSU will take a 3-2 MAC record into a Wednesday (April 6) home doubleheader vs. Miami. Game one of that twinbill is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. at the BGSU Softball Field.
Congrats Liz! BEAT MIAMI TWICE!!
