Kate's done great things, and she's probably an easy top ten all-time, but as has been said, to go out and retire her number would slight some wonderful accomplishments by some outstanding players (four or five of which she shared the floor with for three years).
I was trying to say something to this effect....didn't do so well.

I whole heartedly agree with plans like this. This is something long overdue. I'm guessing the Stroh Center could house something like this but in a much better capacity.
Miles in Football
Thurmond in Men's BBall
and 3 hockey players
is that it?
Also I think it is a great time to retire both Jackie Mo and Kate's jerseys... They are both worthy of it. Personally I think that Jackie and Kate are both no brainers and Ali eventually.
I don't think we should retire anybody's number anytime soon. It's not something you want to get in the habit of doing.
If we're saying Jackie and Kate and Ali are no-brainers, what about Prochaska in 3 years? What about the next big recruit that Miller brings in? And the next?
Kate is a very special player, perhaps one of the best ever at BG, but with the direction this program is headed perhaps that judgement could be made a bit better 10 years down the road.

CONGRATS KATE!
Some of us for 8 years, watching her evolve in high school. It was a treat to watch her dominate at Clay, she was a good friend while I went to school there, and still is today at BG. Hopefully she can continue as a pro somewhere down the line, or even get a coaching job.
Congrats Kate, and thank you for 8 years of wonderful leadership, sportsmanship and maturity. You're an All-American in our book, and we'll miss your passion and intensity next year.
bgwomenbbfan wrote:I can't help but wonder......given that she is the first ever finalist from BG for National All America (Ali was a Regional finalist but not National).....would that possibly warrent her jersey number being retired?
I was really surprised to see Bianca wearing Carin's #14 this season to be honest but I firmly believe that nobody should ever wear #20 again.
Lets let some time pass before we start speculating about retiring jersey numbers. But I do think Kate is deserving if we did indeed do it.
how much time do you propose? Her accomplishments aren't going to change between now and whenever and her impact on the University as well as the Women's basketball program won't change either. I was just tossing the thought out there but truthfully, if it's ever going to happen, they (the athletic department) already know it. Time won't change their thinking.
Freshman Year: 1st Team MAC All Freshman and MAC Tournament MVP
Soph. Year : 2nd Team All-MAC and MAC All Tournament Team
Jr. Year : 2nd Team All MAC and MAC All Tournament Team
Sr. Year: MAC Player of the Year and Finalist for National All American Team
Career: 1st in BG History for Assists, FT's attempted, FT's made, 8th (maybe 7th?) all time scoring, 4th MAC all time assists, 4th MAC all time FT's attempted, 4th MAC all time FT's made.
That resume is more than enough to make a decision....and I'm not even mentioning her numerous MAC POW awards through her career as well as various other accomplishments.
Also played in and won, 3 M.A.C. championship games. Also played in five NCAA tournament games and won two. She could very well be the best player BG has EVER had in women's hoops. She is certainly the most accomplished.
I agree with you there Niz, as I look at the info bgwomenbbfan posted I think the only thing missing from Kate's profile would be MAC Freshmen of the Year.
Also not only did she play in and win 3 MAC championship games, and play in 5 NCAA tourney games and win two, put she is only one of two players to ever win 4 straight MAC regular season titles (with of course Whitney being the only other one)
If it took the redskinhawks four years to retire dooflissburger's jersey. I don't think we should start throwing numbers up on the wall just yet either. Thurmond's jersey isn't even officially retired is it? I don't see how any jersey for either sport can be retired until his is official.
Kate's # will be retired someday, there is no rush though. I have a feeling in two or three years, maybe a few more, the girls team will be going on another tear through the NCAA tourney and that's when the right time to retire Kate's # will be.

My thoughts exactly , the way Miller is recruiting we could find our selves with quite a few players that could be possibly be worthy by the time their done. Prochaska for all intent and purposes will likely end up BG's new all-time scoring leader by the time she's done. If your gonna retire Kate's how do you leave off Ali or Prochaska in 3 years? You could have 3 women's numbers gone in span of about 10 or 15 years , again I say just not prudent. I think there are other ways we can proclaim these players greatness and give the honor's they deserve.
this is getting ridiculous. I only suggested this as an idea (actually asked if it were possible) because of Kate's status as a National finalist for All American...something that's NEVER been acheived by a women's player at BG prior to this. Where did all of these other names come from? With all due respect...none of the people mentioned have accomplished what Kate did so it is not an accident that I never mentioned them. Nobody can predict what Lauren will do. She could get injured just as easily as she could blow up the record book and become the 2nd BG player ever to play in the WNBA (because Kate is going to be the first). Ali could be mentioned but still...her individual and team accomplishments do not match Kate's. Liz and Carin's accomplishments, while VERY impressive, don't come even close to what Kate did in 4 years...and the first person who mentions points scored gets the dummy kick in the arse award because there is SO much more going on during a game than just points. As for the people from the Class of '07, ask any one of them and they'll look you straight in the eye and tell you that without Kate, they don't win 3 MAC regular season titles, they don't win 3 MAC tournaments, and they don't win any games at the big dance. If they won't say it, their coaches already HAVE said it. That is why IF there were to ever be consideration given for the HONOR of having a jersey retired, Kate should be the one and only. That's all my point was to start with.
Forget the idea was even mentioned. I didn't intend to start a pissing contest here.

Easy. No need to get testy. Sorry if some of our posts sounded like we're jumping on you cuz we're not. You weren't wrong or anything by bringing it up , its good discussion which is what this forum is about anyway. Besides I think everyone is in agreement that Kate is definitely worthy , the only disagreement may be in when is the best time to decide to actually pull the trigger and retire a jersey number for all time.
Oh and I know you didn't mean to slam Ali but she also was critical to our success just as Kate Achter's unless you have slight bias in favor of pg's for some reason. I just think that last year's team is still fresh in our minds and its tough completely rule out an Ali Mann who mind you won Mac FOY and Mac Co-POY. But nevertheless I don't want to start a player vs that player rampage that will go on as long as that one "to fire or not to fire Coach Brandon" thread.
All I know is that the Stroh Center better have a nice place set aside for Mickey Cochrane and his awesome shrine to BG Athletics...There is so much stuff in that little room he has at AA and it could fill a museum!
