I know most people would not like this comparison, but the Big 10 holds their tournament at the same location, the difference is that the women's tournament is the week before the men's tournament. That kind of format also applies to OHSAA seeing as the girl's state tournament is always the week before the boy's tournament. Why couldn't something like this model work for the MAC. Play the women's tournament the week before the men's tournament. The agreement with the Q should be based on hours used not days used. That is a possible solution to give the women's tournament it's own stage as well as keeping the tourney in Cleveland.
Just saying...

I don't know if the Cavs would let that happen. Would make for an awful lot of road games in a two-week stretch.

Re: Tournament Attendance
And you also would have the issue with needing to pull the bands and cheerleaders out for two weeks instead of one. Not likely to fly with the universities.
Re: Tournament Attendance
the tournament falls over spring break most years so there would only be one week where those groups would need to be pulled from classes. Not to mention the fact that there are multiple athletic bands as well as two different squads of cheerleaders so it is possible... Also, if the tournaments were split between two weeks, the Cavs could still play at home, the first couple of rounds have days between them, therefore making it possible for the Cavs to play a game at home on the off day.

Best thing to do is move it to Toledo! It will never have the type of billing it should in Cleveland. The MAC office knows this but doesn't want the tournament split. So now in the meantime the women are the second act.jg4242 wrote:And you also would have the issue with needing to pull the bands and cheerleaders out for two weeks instead of one. Re: Tournament Attendance
You're still asking those students to give up twice the time they already do... and we don't take multiple bands to the tournament... we take a select group based on audition scores and attendance. Also, remember that those students are already being removed from class for NCAA's and/or NIT. Most of those students simply cannot afford to miss that much school.vwfalcon wrote:the tournament falls over spring break most years so there would only be one week where those groups would need to be pulled from classes. It really is difficult to get enough people to pull that off. We had to switch people in a week time-span from MAC to NCAA because of conflicts. Don't get me wrong, I love playing in the band and supporting the team, but how much class is missed is key. With a lot of professors - even ones in the College of Music at times, don't want students missing class. A lot frown on NCAA travel too. If you split the tournaments up, especially in different weeks, it's going to cause a huge logistical nightmare.

WHEW! Thank the Lord that we haven't made the men's tourney since 1968 then. Could you imagine the fiasco it would have created had the men and women's basketball teams both made the tourney last year? After hearing all of this about how hard it would be to coordinate for just the MAC tourney, I am so glad we didn't have to face the problem with the NCAA tourney.musicman2343 wrote:+1jg4242 wrote:You're still asking those students to give up twice the time they already do... and we don't take multiple bands to the tournament... we take a select group based on audition scores and attendance. Re: Tournament Attendance
Unfortunately, these problems are very real. BGSU does not have 500 band members just sitting around with nothing to do, just waiting to be shipped off to some MAC or NCAA Tournament location. Most band members are actual human beings with actual lives, just like the general student population (most of them are human beings, too).transfer2BGSU wrote:WHEW! And -- sit down for this one -- some profs don't care that the basketball team is in a tournament. Some of them actually assign papers and give tests during the month of March, and some even require students to show up for class. I'm sure the kids in the band love going on the road and supporting the team, but it's not like they could miss the bulk of three weeks (women's MAC tourney, men's MAC tourney, NCAA tourney) without batting an eye.

Re: Tournament Attendance
Wonder how the Big schools ( TOSU, Tenn, Duke, etc) handle this inconvenience?
