I can't speak for the ins and outs of the program and what they are doing personally to try to make african-american recruits and players feel welcome at BGSU, but I feel that simple demographics might be working against us here.

Here are Wood County's projected 2010 census demographics, broken down by race. I got these off of a congressional redistricting application:

Total population - 125,340
White - 115,246 (92%)
Hispanic - 4,948 (4%)
Black - 2,131 (2%)
Asian - 1,612 (1%)
Other - 1,153 (1%)

The simple fact that only 2% of Wood County's population is black can't be a good thing when trying to recruit african-american talent. Now I know that the proportion of african-americans that attend BGSU is higher than 2%, but the overall numbers can give people the assumption that BG is in the midst of rural and exurban land that isn't very diverse in demographics or culture. More specifically, if you put us up against say, Toledo or Akron, or even Eastern Michigan to a degree, you'd think african-american MAC level talent would look toward those schools first.

At the same time, you wouldn't expect J Crew U to be mopping up minority players either. Does anybody know what the racial breakdown of their roster is?

At least to the eye test, Miami has three African-American players on its current 12 person roster.

Well, somebody was going to play the race card :axe:
It had to be tough to Victoria McGowan to be here. In fact, it has to be tough for all freshmen to be on such a talented team. You go from being the queen of high school to trying to learn BG's system and eke out minutes of P.T. That, and the season is much longer than high school. We saw what happened to the team last year, they kinda just ran out of gas. It seemed that every time Victoria got in to play, she was under pressure to be spectacular. She has a sweet shot, but she was also not able to force it up against the other talented players she played against. Then, it seemed like she was pressing for more time. Remember, she did do well at the tourney, but by then, we needed her to spell our tired and weary players and she just wasn't ready.

I think Coach did a much better job this year of easing the freshmen into the lineup and with 2 starters gone, the rising sophomores have a lot more experience than our freshman got last year. Next year's class is the one that really worries me, because I'll be sad to see Lo and Jen and Maggie and TP go. I'm reasonably certain that this will be the core of next year's starters. I gotta believe that one of the 6'2 kids will also work her way into the starting lineup, be that Z or Havel or maybe Albert.

I just hope that TP and Lo have banner years next year. I said last year the Tracey would make us forget about Kate Achter and it looked like that was going to happen until she got hurt this year. Geeze, coming off the MAC tourney game last year she looked like it was gonna happen. But I guess injuries are part of the game. I"s sure UT felt if they had Johnson they would have beat us :-)

Anyway, enough rambling. GO FALCONS!

I cannot believe this is something that is being talked about....SERIOUSLY????? Wow....just wow  ......Let's take the focus off of what a great job Tamika has done and make it into something that has NOTHING TO DO WITH THE SUCCESS OF OUR PROGRAM!!!! :axe: ....I'm just stunned. Really.

It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."

+1.

While the discussion of this team being a comfortable and available opportunity for people of all backgrounds is a viable and discussable issue, this is not the time or place for it.

I agree about Nurse completely. I just have to wonder if she had been around for last year and the year before too, how much better those two teams could have been. She's a real talent that we have been blessed to be able to call our own, even for just a year. Not just is she a solid player, she also represents the school extremely well in her press conferences and with her poise. I hope she has served well as an example for the younger players on the team.

Tamika - you will be missed a lot!

If I am not mistaken, Shanique Ogle is only a junior. She is only a verbal at this time. I think I did see her at a game during the season. But remember, if she hasn't yet signed her letter of intent, then we really cannot have any contact with her.

Pretty sure she's a Sr. I distinctly saw Brandi Poole right after the playing of the BG alma mater of one of our home games walk right up to the girl smiling and hugging her and chatting and what not. She has to have signed her LOI before then.

She's a junior

But even if she hasn't signed, we can still have just as much contact with her as any other school in the country. Not sure when the quiet periods are, but I would think having a verbal commitment would give the coaches just as much reason to contact her (or more), within regulations.

She is a Junior, and if it was during a contact period that you saw her at a game, or if she was on an unofficial visit, then any coach is perfectly allowed to talk to, smile at and hug her, without a signed letter of intent. The only time it would not be allowed, was during a dead period, and we didn't have any games during that time frame. You might want to go to the NCAA website and read the recruiting rules.

Unofficial Visit
Any visit by you and your parents to a college campus paid for by you or your parents. The only expense you may receive from the college is three complimentary admissions to a home athletics contest. You may make as many unofficial visits as you like and may take those visits at any time. The only time you cannot talk with a coach during an unofficial visit is during a dead period.

The only dead period in the schedule was 12/24-26.
